When was your last eye exam? For a lot of neighbors who came through The Stewpot that answer many times is counted in years.

Around 70 neighbors received eye care at todayā€™s Vision Health Day, thanks to Focus on Community and eye care specialists from across the metroplex, including two doctors. Many who came got exams and glasses today! But as does happen, word spreads and more people come. However, those we couldnā€™t see today left with a voucher for a free exam and glasses at Cedar Springs Eye Clinic, so nobody walked out empty-handed.

It was a day of clarity. When you havenā€™t been able to see clearly in years, there are smiles. And tears. And a boost of confidence. Thank you to the volunteers and professionals who spent their Friday making it happen.

If you got to know The Stewpot during North Texas Giving Day, hereā€™s a side of us we donā€™t show off nearly enough.

On September 12, Stewpot artists opened a show at the East Dock ā€œArts Corridorā€ in Oak Cliff. The building went up in 1915 as an ice factory. It made airplane parts during World War II, then spent years printing and binding books. The brick walls are still there, and right now theyā€™re covered in paintings.

Our Art Program gives unhoused neighbors a studio, supplies, and a place to show and sell their work. Artists keep 90% of every sale. Some have painted with us for more than a decade.

A big shoutout to Alice Stevenson, who presented her amazing work. Thanks also to Proxy Properties, LLC for opening the space and hosting the gallery, and to Commissioner John Wiley Price for spending the afternoon with the artists and guests.

The show is open through Saturday, October 3, at 900 E. Clarendon Drive, Dallas, TX 75203. Stop by, bring a friend, and maybe take something home.

The Hobbit was published 89 years ago today. J.R.R. Tolkien gave that line to a dwarf king at the end of his life, after heā€™d learned what was actually worth having in life.

Food, company, and maybe a little singing. šŸ˜Š Come volunteer with us in our food pantry or at meal services and we guarantee youā€™ll experience this, yes even the singing sometimes.

Thank you to the volunteers and donors who make that kind of day possible in Dallas.

This one is about Dallas and Fort Worth. About our teams, our music, and the places where somebody already knows your order.

It's also about the fact that some of the people who love this place have nowhere in it to sleep tonight.

What changes that isn't complicated. Someone stops. Learns a name. Sits down long enough to hear the real answer to how are you. The situation is still hard. The person isn't handling it alone anymore.

Ninety seconds, and worth the ninety.

He'd been unhoused for years. He said yes to being filmed.

So I was standing in the corner of an empty apartment with a camera while a man walked through it for the first time. Nothing scripted, nothing staged, no direction from me. I just didn't want to be the reason he was performing.

He ends it himself. I'm not adding anything to that.

We asked our staff why they do what they do. The consistency of the answer in a variety of forms was astonishing.

They / We love helping people. That's it. It came up whether we were talking to someone in the kitchen, someone in housing, or someone in philanthropy.

When you're thinking about where to give today for North Texas Giving Day remember that The Stewpot isn't just doing the work, we're passionate about it. People just matter.

The match is still going until midnight! www.northtexasgivingday.org/thestewpot
