🔥 MORRIS COUNTY BURN BAN REMAINS IN EFFECT 🔥

As of October 5, Morris County’s average Keetch–Byram Drought Index (KBDI) is 678 on a scale of 0–800, with readings across the county ranging from 604 to 729. These numbers reflect very dry conditions.

KBDI takes into account rainfall, temperature, and accumulated moisture deficits to estimate dryness in the soil and layers of leaves and other organic material. Higher readings indicate greater dryness and the potential for more intense, persistent wildfires.

When assessing whether to lift a burn ban, we must consider the ENTIRE county. Some areas have received welcome rain, while others may not have received nearly as much. We are also dealing with high winds, which can spread a fire quickly and make it much harder to control.

We do not take the decision to impose a burn ban lightly, and we approach lifting it with the same care. We remain in close contact with our local fire chiefs and consider their input as we evaluate conditions.

We are hopeful that more precipitation will materialize soon, but there is currently none in the immediate forecast. I understand that cooler weather and the onset of fall make people want to burn brush and clean up their property. However, conditions remain unsafe for outdoor burning.

The Morris County Commissioners Court has not lifted the burn ban. Please help keep our neighbors, firefighters, and communities safe by observing the ban and waiting until the Court determines conditions are safe enough to lift it.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
