What is the Montessori method? 🌿

Montessori is a child-centered approach to learning that encourages independence, curiosity, and hands-on discovery. Instead of simply telling children what to do, Montessori-inspired classrooms give children opportunities to explore materials, practice real-life skills, make choices, and learn at their own pace.

The benefits go beyond academics. Children develop confidence, concentration, problem-solving skills, independence, and a genuine love of learning—all while learning to care for themselves, their classroom, and their community. 🤍

At Growing Roots, we bring these principles into a warm, welcoming environment with both a Montessori-inspired classroom and an outdoor classroom where children can learn through exploration and play.

There’s something special about seeing children turn a few simple materials into a space of their own. 🌿✨

Our students gathered together under a little lean-to fort they created in the outdoor classroom—building, problem-solving, collaborating, and, most importantly, enjoying the space they helped create.

At Growing Roots, we value the process just as much as the finished product. These moments of imaginative play and hands-on exploration are where children learn to work together, care for their environment, and discover what they’re capable of. 💚

There’s no such thing as bad weather at Growing Roots—just the need for the right gear! ❄️☀️🌧️

Our students spend time outside in every season, from snowy winter days to warm summer afternoons. Year-round outdoor time helps children build resilience, confidence, gross motor skills, and a deeper connection to the natural world.

So grab the snow pants, boots, rain gear, hats, and sunscreen—and let’s get outside! 🌲

Of course, safety always comes first. During unsafe conditions like lightning, hail, or high winds, we head indoors.

Finishing Touches in Our 0–3 Classroom! ✨

Construction in our 0–3 classroom is officially (almost!) complete! The space is now really starting to feel like a classroom. 🥹

We have just a few odds and ends left to finish, but seeing this space come together has been so exciting. This classroom represents more than just a new space for Growing Roots — it’s a step toward filling an important need in our community for quality care and early learning opportunities for children ages 0–3.

A huge thank you to Cloud Construction for all of their hard work bringing this space to life. We’re so grateful for the time, skill, and care they’ve put into making this classroom a reality.

And, of course, none of this would have been possible without the generosity of our donors and community supporters. Every contribution has helped move this project forward and bring us closer to opening our doors to our youngest students.

We’re so thankful for everyone who has helped make this vision a reality. We can’t wait to see this room filled with little ones learning, exploring, and growing! 🌱

🌿✨ What a wonderful Open House at Growing Roots! ✨🌿

It was so special to welcome both new and returning families into our newly refreshed classroom tonight! After all the work that has gone into preparing the space, we’re excited to see it come to life with a new year of learning, discovery, and growth.

You may have noticed that some of our shelves look a little lighter than usual—and that’s intentional! In true Montessori fashion, we begin the year with a carefully selected number of activities. This allows children to build foundational skills, develop independence, and learn how to thoughtfully care for their materials before gradually introducing more advanced work.

Our classroom is ready to support learning across all of our core areas:

🌱 Practical Life — always a favorite!
🔎 Sensorial
📚 Language & Classroom Library
🔢 Math
🌎 Science & Culture
🕊️ Peace Table

Each family also went home with a copy of The Montessori Child to help strengthen the connection between what children experience at school and how we can support their development at home.

We’re especially excited to introduce our new Regulation Room this year—a calm, dedicated space where children can take a break, regulate their bodies and emotions, and return to the classroom when they’re ready. Learning to recognize and navigate big feelings is an important life skill, and we’re proud to create a space that supports children in developing that skill with respect and independence.

Thank you to all of the families who joined us tonight and to everyone who has helped prepare our classroom for this new chapter. We can’t wait for a year full of curiosity, confidence, connection, and growing together. 🌿📚🪵

We are all set up and ready for our Growing Roots families and friends to come shop tonight at the Open House Gear Swap for gently used kids and baby fall and winter gear! ❄️🍂

We also have a surprise raffle available - a $100 gift card to the South Dakota Outdoor Shop courtesy of our generous community. SDOS has excellent outdoor brands and can custom order any kids’ and baby sizes for you from their vendors for pickup right here in Custer. 🌲

You do not need to make a donation to apply for the raffle tonight, but we are still taking donations. If you have gently used kids or baby winter coats, jackets, gloves, hats, warm winter socks, warm layers, etc., you are welcome to bring them by or drop them off today.
