Burning Beetle

Burning Beetle πŸ”₯🐜πŸ”₯
Burning Beetle will be Jan. 16, 2027. The Burning Beetle is an annual Winter event located in Custer, South Dakota.

The event is ALWAYS on the third Saturday of January. The event was created in response to the Mountain Pine Beetle, and the massive landscape change and forest destruction caused by the tiny beetle. The event supports the Custer Area Arts and includes a community variety show, a torch-bearing march, a burning beetle effigy, and a Custer pub (bug) crawl supporting our local establishments. At the

end of it all, we hope those who attend will walk away with more awareness of the mountain pine beetle, its destruction of our forests, and a better understanding of forest management and our beautiful home - The Black Hills.

❗️Qury Fire Educational Bus Tour – April 17❗️

Join local fire professionals for a free guided bus tour of areas impacted by the Qury Fire. This educational tour will highlight how Firewise and other mitigation actions taken before the fire helped protect homes and structures when the fire moved through the area. Professionals from South Dakota Wildland Fire and U.S. Forest Service will provide information on fire ecology, fire behavior, and steps landowners can take to reduce wildfire risks.

The tour will occur on Friday, April 17, bus departing at 10:00 am and finishing around noon. Registration is required and space is limited. To register, contact Mike at 673-5680 or email [email protected].

The tour is sponsored by the Custer County Conservation District with transportation provided in partnership with the Custer YMCA.

HATS OFF (see what we did there?!) to our amazing Custer City crew. We are so fortunate to work with them every year for our event, but this year was just above and beyond!

We appreciate their help in getting the tree pile taken care of after this year's event was cancelled, in addition to all they do prior to the event. THANK YOU!!! (And thanks, Hank, for being our hat model!)

Hi! Remember us? Sadly, this isn't the post we wanted to make...we have unfortunately decided to cancel the Torch March, Burning of the Beetle and Fireworks for this year.

The Burning Beetle’s mission and one of its goals is to foster an appreciation for our forest home. We know that we live in an environment that brings uncertainty and change, and Mother Nature will continue to pose challenges for our community. We all remember:
Β· When the Mountain Pine Beetles came, we learned about those tiny beetles and the destruction they brought. We also learned to deal with the issues they created, and we created the Burning Beetle event to celebrate where we live.
Β· When the Covid Pandemic came, we worked to keep ourselves safe, we mourned the loss of friends and for a few years our lives changed. But we were resilient and forged ahead.

We are now faced with a winter unlike any in memory. Warm weather, the lack of snow and moisture, and unprecedented winds have created conditions where fire is a real danger.

On the plus side, this January we had a great Community Meeting that raised awareness about this place where we live, and we had a terrific Variety Show at the high school. And an AMAZING Bug Crawl!

The Burning Beetle committee is determined to be back again on January 16, 2027, with our Burning Beetle community celebration that focuses on our connection to the Black Hills and encourages support for the arts in our community.

To those who purchased torch tickets this year, logistically, we are not able to transfer them to next year's beetle. We hope you will consider donating the torch ticket purchase to the Custer Area Arts Council to future its mission of promoting and celebrating arts in the Custer community. However, we understand if you do want a refund. Any refund requests should be emailed to [email protected].

We were able to pull one over on Hank yesterday during the Variety Show! How do you honor and recognize someone for their 14 years of dedication to a cause? You give them their own day, of course!!

January 17 is now Hank Fridell day in Custer! Thank you Mayor Brown for being there to bestow the honor!
