There's a new bookstore in town! Located in Parkville's Main Street, Typo's Bookstore had its grand opening this past weekend. Owner and SCBWI member Lisa McCormick is the brainchild behind the bookstore. (I took a photo of her but my phone didn't save it, sorry :( ) The shelves are well-curated, with a robust children's section, and a cute reading nook in the back! If you're in the Northland in KC, please stop by!

Attendees will have the opportunity to submit to both Carter and Sera for a limited time after the webinar. Both of these agents are currently closed to children's submissions, so take advantage of this unique opportunity for querying authors and illustrators!

This month’s featured illustrator is Melissa Whitaker, a St. Louis area–based illustrator who mixes collage, ink, and digital techniques to create vibrant, layered worlds brimming with color, texture, and heart. She is especially interested in visual storytelling that uses metaphor or subtle humor to add layers to a narrative. Growing up in Hawaii, California, New Jersey, and Missouri gave her a love of adventure and a habit of noticing the small, curious details that make stories come alive. That sense of exploration fuels her children’s book, cover, and editorial illustrations. Her process is equal parts scissors, paper, ink, and a little magic—turning scraps into characters and textures into stories. When she isn’t in the studio, Melissa can be found kayaking, traveling, taking photographs, or attempting the impossible task of keeping her books and art supplies neatly stacked (spoiler: the books usually win). Follow her on Instagram here: , visit her website: https://melissawhitaker.com, and see a recent project here: https://a.co/d/0gnLsc2k.

If you've ever wondered what "voice" is and how to create an engaging voice in your manuscript, or if you've ever wondered what an editorial agent does, this workshop is for you! Carter will discuss establishing voice in the beginning of your manuscript, and will go through how he works as an editorial agent. He will also demonstrate this process in real time through a live edit of an attendee's picture book manuscript! Attendees will be emailed instructions on how to submit their manuscripts for a potential live edit with Carter after registering. A limited number of critiques are available for purchase. Carter is willing to critique manuscripts of any genre or illustrator portfolios (no author-illustrator dummies, sorry!).

About Carter:
Carter Hasegawa (he/him) has been in the children’s book world for over 20 years—as a book seller for various indies across the US, as an editor at Candlewick Press, and now, as a literary agent with Tugeau 2 Art and Literary Agency. “The thing I’ve always loved about children’s literature,” he says, “is that beyond the sheer range of incredible stories, it’s always served as a sort of testing ground for me: of new ideas, of new experiences, of new viewpoints, of emotional extremes.” Some of his favorite books include WATERCRESS, MY PAPI HAS A MOTORCYCLE, BIG, TAR BEACH, WEDNESDAY WARS, ENDER’S GAME, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, THE NOTORIOUS BENEDICT ARNOLD, and SO MANY others. Originally from Seattle, Carter now lives in Boston with his librarian wife and their two young sons.
