Middle Finger To Cancer

Middle Finger To Cancer In the summer of 2015, Trent Twaddle, MF2C's founder, was a seemingly healthy 32 year-old financial analyst living with his new wife in Houston, Texas.

MF2C stands with patients seeking treatment for sarcoma cancers of the limb, providing benevolent assistance to lessen their burden and help them fight their battle. Following his wedding in May, Trent was seen by an orthopedic surgeon to evaluate a small lump in the palm of his right hand. The lump was first noticed in April of 2015 and was thought to perhaps be a common fibroma. After several we

eks of physical therapy and no improvement an MRI proved to be suspicious of a tumor. A core needle biopsy was taken at MD Anderson July 31st. The Division of Pathology studied the tissue specimen and results were returned August 14th. Trent was informed that the lump in his hand was a sarcoma. More specifically, it was a Myxoinflammatory Fibroblastic Sarcoma. The doctors at M D Anderson informed him that amputation of his right hand at mid-forearm was the treatment of choice. After the initial shock, thoughts turned to locating someone for a second opinion. Dr. Ed Athanasian, MD at Memorial Sloan Kettering was seen by Trent September 14th . Dr. Athanasian confirmed the diagnosis but suggested a possible alternative to immediate amputation…Isolated Limb Perfusion with Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-a). By this time Trent had lost most of the normal function of his right hand. As TNF-a is not available in the U.S., Trent’s next stop was Paris France where he was hospitalized at Institute Gustave Roussy. On October 20 th , in a 7-hour procedure, a mixture of TNF-a and Malphan was delivered to the tumor via Isolated Limb Perfusion. Trent returned to the New York in December for a 5-week course of Radiation Therapy. March 11, 2016 an MRI at Memorial Sloan Kettering revealed remarkable shrinkage of the tumor mass. He had also regained most of his right hand function and dexterity. Dr. Athanasian performed surgery on March 16 th to remove the remains of the sarcoma. The importance of removing the entirety of the tumor with clean margins necessitated the amputation of his middle finger. The biopsy report found absolutely no remaining cancer cells. Trent continues to return to Memorial Sloan Kettering every 4 months for scans and will continue to do so for a number of years. All reports to date are very good and promising. Trent wishes to share this story to encourage those with similar diagnoses to follow his path of second opinions and the hope for a cure. Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha is an important treatment adjunct and we encourage its use in the United States. TNF-a in Isolated Limb Profusion is a sarcoma treatment with 20-plus years of success in Europe. It is long past time for the drug manufacturers to submit it to the FDA for U.S. approval. Trent Twaddle is an avid golfer, having competed as a scholarship athlete for the University of Missouri. Minus his middle finger, Trent has returned to competitive golf and in the summer of 2017 competed in qualifying rounds for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. Through the power of God, the power of prayer and God’s guidance of the hands and hearts of great doctors and nurses all things are possible. Trent truly gave the “Middle Finger to Cancer!”

"I'm really grateful for all of the great friends and support I have received while battling cancer and starting the Middle Finger To Cancer organization. It is now my goal to pay everything that I can forward to those that are in a similar situation that I was and to cancer research."
