Buckeye Community Hope Foundation Buckeye Community Hope Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to enriching the lives of others.

The Buckeye Community Hope Foundation (BCHF) was approved as a community school sponsor by the State of Ohio Board of Education in 2004. BCHF believes that community schools are an innovative and progressive approach for developing high quality educational options and seeks to foster and nurture productive relationships with Ohio community schools, providing ongoing guidance and professional oversight geared toward the success of community schools and their students. BCHF is committed to promoting high student achievement, financial stewardship, and responsible governance and management with the schools we authorize. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2026 All Schools Meeting at The Fawcett Center!

We truly appreciate you taking the time to come together as a BCHF school community as we kicked off the 2026–27 school year. Your engagement, participation, and commitment to your schools and students are what make our community so strong.

Discover the instructional framework that sets the foundation for high-impact teaching and learning. Participants will explore the Gradual Release of Responsibility model, examine the characteristics of effective instruction, and reflect on current classroom practices.

This introductory session establishes a common foundation for the series while helping teachers identify strengths, prioritize areas for growth, and prepare to intentionally implement evidence-based instructional strategies throughout the school year.

At Newark Townhomes, Service Coordinator Stephanie is helping make reading fun and rewarding for young residents through the new Reading Book Club.

Launched in July, the monthly reading program encourages children to read or be read to by earning a star for every book they complete. At the end of each month, the stars can be exchanged for prizes, giving kids an extra incentive to discover new stories and spend time reading.

The program has already inspired plenty of reading, with books such as The Day the Crayons Quit, Dragons Love Tacos, Goodnight Moon, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, and many more being checked out, read and returned.

The Reading Book Club is also bringing families together for fun community events. On August 30, residents celebrated Pajama Day and enjoyed a Let's Make S'mores event. Children came dressed in their pajamas, brought along their favorite stuffed animals, listened to The House of Boo, and redeemed their reading stars for prizes before enjoying some delicious s'mores.

With 17 visitors in July and 10 in August, the library continues to be a welcoming space for residents to connect, learn and enjoy time together.

Stephanie plans to continue the Reading Book Club each month, along with monthly activities. September will bring fall wreath-making, with a fun fall or Halloween-themed activity planned for October.

It's wonderful to see a love of reading growing at Newark Townhomes, one book and one star at a time.

Join us for the first session of our year-long book study! In this inaugural session, participants will sign up to receive their copy of The Teach Like a Champion Guide to the Science of Reading and explore its overarching framework.

We will unpack how the brain learns to read, focusing on the relationship between working memory, automaticity, and comprehension. Educators will analyze how classroom culture impacts cognitive load and learn how to position reading as an active, engaging pursuit.

By the end of this session, we will establish book study norms and outline our future meeting expectations. Participants will leave with a fire in their belly, ready to improve reading instruction and get every student reading on grade level.

Teaching English in a dropout recovery setting is fundamentally different from teaching English in a traditional high school. The students often have significant skill gaps, interrupted schooling, work and family responsibilities, trauma histories, attendance challenges, and negative experiences with English classes.

The goal shifts from "covering content" to accelerating literacy. It is also our job to rebuild confidence and independence. Using the research on alternative education, disciplinary literacy, adult learning, and the work of experts like Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, Kelly Gallagher, and Penny Kittle, we will explore high leverage literacy skills; shorter, more frequent writing; reading relevance; building thinking into each lesson; the importance of human contact; the Gradual Release of Responsibility model.

Whether you teach high school students in person; completely online; or a hybrid model with packets and occasional contact, you will be able to walk away from this session with more tools for your toolbox for the non-traditional high school student.

Village Green Apartments in Crooksville, Ohio, experienced devastating flooding during the August 11 storm, with many residents requiring boat rescues and most units sustaining approximately 16 inches of water damage.

Throughout the crisis, Service Coordinator Karissa Robinson has gone above and beyond to support Village Green residents. She has worked tirelessly to secure donations, connect residents with needed resources, and assist with individual needs during this incredibly difficult time. After sharing the community’s needs on social media, Karissa even connected with a woman in Virginia who was so moved by the situation that she began mailing supplies directly to the residents.

Karissa has also worked closely with RLJ Management to coordinate support and ensure residents have access to the resources they need - Village Green and the surrounding Crooksville community experienced additional flooding this past Sunday, adding another challenge for residents already working to recover.

BCHF is incredibly grateful for Karissa’s tireless dedication and compassion. Her commitment to serving residents and helping them navigate this difficult time is a powerful example of what it means to be there for the communities we serve.

The Early Literacy Strategies Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) is a teacher-centered space for examining literacy practices, sharing strategies, and reviewing outcomes as we all navigate the Science of Reading and the needs of Ohio's youngest learners. This session will focus on kindergarten learners and their needs. We will enjoy exploring strategies and activities and discuss how to develop essential, foundational literacy skills for our youngest learners!
