Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has

grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Healthy snacks, coffee and blood pressure checks are an optional part of a Walk with a Doc event. The Walk added an Executive Director in 2009 and focused on building a program that could easily be implemented by interested doctors in other cities around the country. As a result of these efforts, the reach of Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide! Walking was recognized by the former Surgeon General of the United States of America as one of the single most important things we can do for our health. Will you join us in making health and happiness accessible for all?

Good morning!

Happy Friday, my friend.

๐ŸŒฑ One of my favorite questions to ask patients is how they like to stay active.

This time of year, one answer comes up again and again: gardening.

And every time I hear it, my heart sings a little.

Gardening is one of those rare activities that seems to do just about everything right.

๐Ÿ’š It helps us manage stress.
๐Ÿ… It encourages healthier eating.
๐Ÿง  It may help protect our brains.
โ˜€๏ธ It helps us make Vitamin D.
๐Ÿ‘Ÿ And yes, it counts as exercise.

Gardening involves squatting, lifting, reaching, carrying, digging, pulling, pushing, and walking.

Basically, it's a long athletic game of Twister, only with weeds and rutabagas.

It also creates social connection. Community gardens are wonderful places to share knowledge, swap stories, and build friendships.

Whatever you choose, there's something deeply satisfying about planting a seed, tending to it, and watching it grow.

I hope you have a wonderful, green weekend.

๐ŸŒŸ Featured WWAD Chapter ๐ŸŒŸ

Grundy County Memorial Hospital has been walking the walk since 2016, continually finding creative ways to meet people where they are and make movement more accessible in their community.

Over the years, their Walk with a Doc program has taken many forms. Before the hospitalโ€™s beautiful LiveWell Loop walking path existed, leaders used Walk with a Doc to introduce community members to the countyโ€™s Pioneer Nature Trail, encourage families to explore the local Story Book Walk, engage parents waiting outside dance practice, and even connect with fairgoers by walking through the cattle barns at the county fair.

Today, the program has developed a strong core group of repeat attendees while continuing to welcome new walkers each year. Hosting walks on the hospital campus has also opened the door for more hospital staff members to participate, further strengthening the sense of community and connection that has become a hallmark of the program.

After a decade, Grundy County Memorial Hospital continues to prove that meaningful health promotion doesnโ€™t always happen inside clinic walls, sometimes it happens on trails, sidewalks, fairgrounds, and walking loops shared together.

We all need a place where we feel connected, supported, and seen. Weโ€™re excited to celebrate Lifestyle Medicine Week!

Across the globe, our Walk with a Doc leaders are stepping outside the clinic to walk alongside their communities, building meaningful relationships, sharing evidence-based health information, and helping make healthy living more accessible, social, and sustainable.

They aren't just talking about lifestyle medicine; theyโ€™re modeling it in their community, one step at a time.

If you're new to lifestyle medicine, learn more at https://lifestylemedicine.org (American College of Lifestyle Medicine)
