Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has

grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Healthy snacks, coffee and blood pressure checks are an optional part of a Walk with a Doc event. The Walk added an Executive Director in 2009 and focused on building a program that could easily be implemented by interested doctors in other cities around the country. As a result of these efforts, the reach of Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide! Walking was recognized by the former Surgeon General of the United States of America as one of the single most important things we can do for our health. Will you join us in making health and happiness accessible for all?

We live in a world that constantly pushes us to move faster, do more, and optimize everything. But healing, connection, and meaningful change rarely happen at full speed. In this week’s newsletter, Dr. Sabgir reflects on the importance of slowing down, and why walking may be one of the best forms of “slow medicine” we have: https://walkwithadoc.org/2026/05/slow-medicine

The monthly Walk with a Doc program in Tulsa is off to a great start!

The walk last Saturday featured a discussion on the importance of social connections, reminding us that spending time with others in a positive setting is very beneficial for our health and wellbeing.

The group was thrilled to be joined by Mayor Monroe Nichols, Chief Health Officer Dr. Jabran Pasha, and several other healthcare providers.

Tulsa is walking the walk!

What an amazing kickoff in Rockville, Maryland! 🎉

About 40 community members joined psychologist Miki Moskowitz for their first Walk with a Doc event. The group started with a brainstorm on the benefits of walking (filling a whiteboard with ideas), then broke into smaller groups to walk at their preferred pace and distance. Everyone left feeling energized, joyful, and excited for next month's walk.

Since 2018, Intermountain Health has been walking the walk 💙

As a proud Walk with a Doc champion, they’ve helped patients and Intermountain employees step toward better health—together. In 2025 alone, 10 programs across Utah and Nevada brought together 2,000+ walker visits focused on movement, connection, and community. 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️

43 Across Clue: "Walking buddy, maybe"

As much as we love our four-legged friends, we firmly believe a better answer would have been "Doc" 😆
