When we hear the word "homelessness,” many of us picture someone sleeping outside, but that myth isn't always the whole story.

The fact is, across Central Ohio, people experiencing homelessness may be staying in an emergency shelter, with friends or family, or in a place that isn’t meant to be lived in.

Each situation is different and behind each one is a person or family with their own story.

That’s why CSB works alongside nonprofit partners, local government, funders, volunteers, and others to connect people with the right support when and where they need it. That could include services that prevent homelessness or help people find housing and move forward.

It’s a community effort, and every part of that effort matters. With World Homeless Day tomorrow, we’d like to know what you’ve learned about homelessness that changed the way you think about it?

Also, please share this post with someone who might find it helpful.

Imagine facing homelessness not just for weeks or months, but for years while also managing serious health, mental health, or other challenges. For many of our neighbors experiencing chronic homelessness, that is their reality.

The 2026 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count found that chronic homelessness in Franklin County increased from 220 to 256 people. Behind those numbers are people who often face significant barriers to housing stability and need more than a temporary place to stay.

Our collective system has shown that affordable housing paired with supportive services can help people move from homelessness to stability and stronger futures.

The data helps us understand where needs are growing, and together we can respond. Thank you to everyone who works, volunteers, advocates, and invests in solutions that make a difference.

What do you think is most important to help people achieve lasting housing stability?

Sometimes, preventing homelessness is as simple as helping a family stay in the home they already have.

When Danielle faced eviction, she was seven months into a high-risk pregnancy and raising four children. Through the Homelessness Prevention for Expectant Mothers program, partners stepped in quickly to stop the eviction, connect her family to resources, and provide the support they needed to stay stable.

Today, Danielle is living in an affordable home with her children, has graduated from nursing school, and is beginning a new career.

Her story reminds us that when we invest in prevention, we create opportunities for families to build brighter futures.

Myth: Emergency shelters are the solution to homelessness.

Fact: Shelters provide immediate safety during a crisis, but lasting stability comes from housing and support services that help people rebuild their lives.

Imagine a family facing an unexpected setback, such as a job loss or medical emergency. An emergency shelter can provide a safe place to stay, but the real success story begins when that family is connected to housing, employment assistance, healthcare, and other resources that help them regain stability.

That’s why CSB works with partner agencies across our community to do more than respond to crises. Together, we help people move from homelessness to stable housing and a brighter future.

When we look beyond emergency response and invest in long-term solutions, our entire community benefits.

Did you know that preventing homelessness is as important as responding to it?

For many of our neighbors, homelessness didn’t start overnight. It’s often caused by unexpected setbacks that can happen to anyone.

The good news is CSB, and our partners are working together to prevent homelessness before it begins and create pathways to stability. We're proud of what our system partners are accomplishing together by offering timely support, rental assistance, housing resources, and other community services during an emergency, so families remain safely housed.

Last year, 3,335 people received homelessness prevention assistance through our coordinated system, and 83% remained stably housed. Finding stability before a housing crisis becomes an emergency requires community support through advocacy, volunteering, and giving.
