House Bill 227 is officially in effect TODAY in Ohio!

The updated law brings important changes to underground utility safety, including revised excavation timelines, new damage reporting requirements, and updated training standards.

These changes are designed to improve communication, increase accountability, and help keep excavators, utilities, and communities safe.

Starting June 9th 2026, House Bill 227 brings new damage reporting requirements to excavation law.

If underground utilities are damaged during excavation:
- ANY damage must be reported to OHIO811 in addition to notifying the utility
- Reports must include the location, type of utility damaged and approximate depth where it was hit

These updates help improve communication, accountability, and safety when damages occur underground.
