Lessons from Our Elders Series: Carol Leigh

Today is International S*x Workers' Day.

Carol Leigh was a q***r s*x worker, activist, writer, and artist who spent her life insisting that s*x workers are experts on their own lives.

In 1978, at a feminist conference in San Francisco, she coined the term "s*x work." Two words that said: this is labor. We are workers. We deserve rights.

That term is now used in public health, human rights law, and international policy globally. One phrase. One woman.

She died in 2022, still organizing. She was also bis*xual โ€” loudly so, at a time when the gay community erased bis*xual identity. She belonged at Pride. All of her did.

We honor Carol for everything she's done for us to follow in her footsteps.

Lessons From Our Elders: Day 4
Barbara Cameron

Barbara Cameron was a Native American le***an activist who spent her life challenging the idea that people should have to separate parts of themselves in order to belong.

For many q***r people, identity is never just one thing.

Race, culture, s*xuality, gender, disability, class, spirituality, family, and lived experience all shape how we move through the world. For BIPOC and multiracial q***r folks especially, those experiences often can't be untangled from one another.

Barbara reminded us that people are not identities stacked neatly into separate boxes.

Her lesson: you deserve to arrive whole.

You shouldn't have to hide your culture to be accepted in q***r spaces.

You shouldn't have to hide your q***rness to be accepted in cultural spaces.

You shouldn't have to choose which parts of yourself get to belong.

As we reflect on Barbara's legacy, ask yourself:

What would it look like to build a community where nobody has to leave pieces of themselves at the door?

Lessons from Our Elders: Bayard Rustin.

He built the March on Washington from the ground up. 250,000 people changed history!
The movement hid him. He'd been arrested in 1953 for being gay and they decided that made him a liability.

He built it anyway, in the background, without any credit or recognition.

18 years after they fired him from his government job for being gay, the federal ban on gay employees was lifted.. and he was present in the room when it did

The work catches up. Do it anyway.

Lessons From Our Elders: Day 2 Sylvia Rivera

Many people know Sylvia Rivera as a Stonewall activist.

What they don't know is that she spent much of her life fighting for the people even the LGBTQ+ movement sometimes wanted to leave behind: trans people, drag queens, s*x workers, and homeless q***r youth.

Sylvia's lesson was simple:

A community that abandons its most vulnerable people has forgotten why it exists.

She didn't just protest. She housed people. Fed people. Shared what little she had. She understood that community isn't an identity. It's something you do.

As we reflect on her legacy, ask yourself:

Who is struggling in our community right now?

Who feels unseen?

And what are we willing to do about it?

Because community begins where convenience ends.

Pride month starts in three days. Before the celebrations, we want to talk about the people who made it possible.

Starting today, we're running a series: Lessons from Our Elders. One person per day. What they faced, what they built, and what they left us.

We're starting with Marsha P. Johnson โ€” Black transgender activist, co-founder of STAR, and one of the people who was at Stonewall the night everything changed.

Swipe through. She has something to say to you.

PS: These are some of the people we're featuring in our q***r history art installation at Rainbow Riot, June 20.

The first Pride was a riot.

Not a parade. Not a brand campaign. A riot, led by q***r and trans people who were tired of being told they did not exist. We haven't forgotten.
