We promote reading by providing free books & positive role models to kids in need while encouraging athletes of the community to pay it forward.

Role Model Reading Program + Columbus Kids' Book Bank. 2nd & 7 encourages student-athletes to read to 2nd graders and talk to them about the importance of reading. Each child receives a free book to keep from the series of Hog Mollies books written by 2nd & 7.

Talk about a Friday morning that fills your cup! We had the pleasure of visiting Waggoner Road Elementary School this morning and spending some time with these amazing students, who also treated us to a surprise rendition of “All I Do is Read.”

And what a great group of student-athletes from Ohio State Women’s Rowing, Ohio State Women’s Lacrosse, Ohio Dominican Women’s Soccer, and Ohio State Women’s Volleyball! Not only do they make the Role Model Reading Program possible, but they show up with energy and intentionality that will have a lasting impact on these students.

Earlier this month we were joined by Team USA Olympic Gold Medalist and OSU Women’s Hockey National Champion Joy Dunne for a Role Model Reading Program visit to Hopewell Elementary! In addition to sharing a presentation about her Olympic journey, she read and discussed our latest Hog Mollies story, The Hog Mollies and the East Elementary Eagles. She is also the Role Model endorser of this book, which teaches students the importance of having a positive attitude, putting forth effort, and responding constructively in difficult situations. Who better to share that message than Joy!

This visit was a great example of the power of the Role Model Reading Program and the positive influence our student-athlete volunteers have in the community. And it was quite the memorable start to the school year for these students!

Did you know the 2nd & 7 Columbus Kids’ Book Bank helps keep Little Free Libraries stocked with books all across Central Ohio? Anyone in our community can visit our website to submit a request for Little Free Library books. And we always have plenty boxed up and ready to find a new home! This is one of the best ways we can meet our community where they are and expand access to free kids’ books.

Thank you to the The Rose Bowl Institute for sponsoring our September Book Giveaway! With their support, we distributed over 4,600 free kids' books to families, teachers, and local organizations that need them.

We were also joined by our friends at KeyBank who handed out Jeremiah Smith's Coloring Book, The Financial Playbook with Jeremiah Smith, to our shoppers.

Today we reflect on the events of September 11, 2001 and we remember the lives lost on that day 25 years ago.

We recently rediscovered this book at the 2nd & 7 Columbus Kids’ Book Bank. Written by elementary school students, this book is a timely reminder of how reading can ignite hope for a better tomorrow. Books are not only a powerful tool for learning and development, but also for building resilience, promoting a sense of community, and opening the door for conversation.

We will never forget. And may we continue to find hope and create a brighter future for the next generation however we can. For us here at 2nd & 7, that happens through the power of books.

Congratulations to former Ohio State Head Football Coach & Lieutenant Governor of Ohio Jim Tressel on his enshrinement into the Ohio Stadium Ring of Honor today!

Lieutenant Governor Tressel has been a longtime supporter of 2nd & 7, receiving our 2021 Legacy of Literacy Award for his work tackling illiteracy over the years. You cannot tell the story of 2nd & 7 without his impact and influence. Thank you for being a part of our huddle and all the incredible work you do to create a positive impact in our community!

Thank you to all our amazing Columbus Kids’ Book Bank volunteer groups who spent time with us in July and August! As the summer comes to a close and the school year gets started, we are busy making sure kids all across Columbus have access to books. Thanks to these groups, thousands of donated books were sorted and quickly distributed where they are needed most. And that’s not all! These volunteers also helped us prepare for our new shipment of Hog Mollies books for the Role Model Reading Program, clearing storage space, taking inventory, and organizing 45,000 books for this school year.

2nd & 7 is proud to support the opening of the brand new school library at Waggoner Road Elementary!

Earlier this week we attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for this incredible space that will provide direct access to books and inspire generations of readers for many years to come. We were thrilled to donate books and play a part in bringing this vision to life, which was led by the amazing staff at Waggoner Road alongside their generous partners in United Way of Central Ohio and KPMG. We also had the honor of facilitating the very first reading in this new space!

We’ll be back soon with our Role Model Reading Program and can’t wait to see the library busy with students eager to check out their next book!
