🏅 Project Learning Tree is a national, science‑based environmental education program that equips educators, youth leaders, and community members with high‑quality, hands‑on resources. Through award‑winning curriculum focused on forests, wildlife, water, and sustainability, PLT helps learners build critical thinking skills, connect with the natural world, and explore real‑world environmental concepts in meaningful ways.

🍃 There are two pathways to get involved. As a PLT Educator, you gain access to ready‑to‑use activities, practical teaching strategies, and curriculum designed to bring environmental learning to life in classrooms and community programs. If you choose to become a PLT Facilitator, you take on a leadership role, training other educators, supporting professional development, and helping expand environmental education across Ohio.

𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟏: 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞! 𝐖𝐞𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬
When someone says the word "gall," the horned oak galls that plague pin oaks in the St. Louis area may come to mind. But did you know that there are an estimated 210,000 types of insect-induced galls in the world, 2,000 of which occur in the U.S.? Each gall is a unique work of art specific to the gall former and serves as a key structure that insects rely on to complete their life cycles.

Join Daria McKelvey, Horticulture Supervisor for the Kemper Center for Home Gardening at the Missouri Botanical Garden for a webinar that takes a closer look at the mysterious, yet beautiful, world of plant galls and how they are formed, where they can be found, and the most common types seen in the Midwest.

This free webinar, to be held via Zoom, will include a presentation and a live question-and-answer session.

The America 250 Legacy Tree Celebration highlights the history, beauty, and significance of one of Ohio’s Champion Trees. Discover how this amazing tree has grown for generations and learn about the stewardship that assists in preserving these trees for the future.

This event is free and open to the public. Come along with us and experience a tree measurement demonstration, a chance to guess the tree’s diameter, a guided interpretive hike, and opportunities to learn about Ohio’s Champion Tree Program from forestry professionals. Participants will also see how much the tree has grown since it was first recognized as a champion.

We are hosting free events in celebration of America 250 and the 2026 Collaborative Summer Library Program theme, “Unearth a Story.”

Earth Science Summer features programs led by our geologists, offering Ohioans of all ages the chance to discover fossils, minerals, landscapes, and the stories our rocks and sediments can tell. Participants at these special events will also receive a limited-edition commemorative decal while supplies last.
