Graduation is a time to celebrate accomplishments, friendships, and exciting new beginnings. It’s also a time when families can play an important role in helping teens stay safe!

Research shows that clear expectations, active supervision, and limiting access to alcohol can make a meaningful difference in reducing underage substance use and related harms. As graduation celebrations approach, take time to talk with your teen about your expectations, check in on their plans, and help create a safe environment for everyone involved.

Safe Harbor’s Cohasset Youth Ambassadors recently hosted the fifth annual Cohasset Minds Matter, its largest student wellness event for middle and high school students. The yearly event provides students with an opportunity to connect with peers, engage in self-care activities, and explore local mental health and wellness resources.

Activities included bracelet making, coloring, lawn games, yoga, crafts, and visits with community organizations, including Norfolk County Su***de Prevention, Samaritans, Cohasset Working Dogs (and chicken!), school guidance counselors, and Safe Harbor staff. Students also enjoyed ice cream from Lolly Jolly Waffles throughout the day!

Middle school students additionally heard from guest speaker Kevin Rosario from ACES, who shared an important message about mental health, resilience, and refusal skills. Safe Harbor is grateful to all the students, CMHS staff, volunteers, and community partners who helped make the event such a positive experience for Cohasset students!

Today was the perfect day for our favorite event of the year, Cohasset Minds Matter! 💙

Today, Cohasset middle and high school students had the opportunity to take a break from the stress of school and focus on their mental health through games, crafts, yoga, conversations with supportive community resources, and of course, an ice cream truck!🍦

Middle school students also had the opportunity to hear from Kevin Rosario from Adolescent Consultation and Education Service, who shared an important message about mental health, resilience, and making positive choices around substance use.

A huge thank you to our community partners who helped make the day possible and reminded students that support is always available:

Cohasset Middle & High School
Norfolk County Su***de Prevention Coalition
Samaritans
Cohasset Middle School Guidance
Cohasset Working Dogs Foundation
Lauren Folan
Kevin Rosario

We’re so grateful to everyone who helped create a fun, supportive space for students to connect, recharge, and prioritize their wellbeing.

Prom night should end with everyone getting home safely ✨

Did you know that nearly one-third of alcohol-related teen traffic deaths happen between April and June?

Before the big night, make a plan with your teen:
• Who’s driving?
• How are they getting home?
• What’s the backup plan?

Remind them: never ride with an impaired driver. And make sure to check in throughout the night.

A quick conversation can make all the difference.

As prom approaches, a reminder for parents and caregivers: hosting teens comes with responsibility.

Under Massachusetts Social Host Laws, adults can face legal consequences if underage drinking occurs in their home or on their property — even if they did not provide the alcohol.

This prom season:
• Know where teens are gathering
• Stay present and aware if teens are in your home
• Don’t ignore or overlook underage drinking
• Help teens celebrate safely and get home safely

We want to give a big thank you to Eren and Aidan from Cohasset High School for their thoughtful work at Wheelwright Park as part of their ISP project!

Eren and Aidan recently installed signs throughout the park that highlight the connection between outdoor movement and mental health, encouraging community members to use walks and time in nature as a form of self-care. Their project also promotes keeping the park clean by properly disposing of trash, especially substance-related litter, to help maintain a safe and welcoming space for everyone.

We’re grateful for their initiative and for the positive impact they’re making in our community!

Prom season is here 💃🕺

Parents and caregivers play a key role in helping teens have a safe, memorable night.

A few ways to support:
• Know the plan (where they’ll be, who they’ll be with, and curfew)
• Plan safe rides (no riding with impaired drivers)
• Connect with other parents to confirm plans and supervision
• If another family is hosting, make sure alcohol won’t be provided or allowed
• Encourage your teen to look out for their friends and trust their instincts
• Keep communication open—let your teen know they can always call you, no questions asked

Planning ahead makes all the difference ✨
