Hurley Medical Center hosts a Cardiac Arrest Survivor Event each year to help survivors reconnect with the crews that helped to save their lives. Paramedic Eric Spilker and EMT Keith Luxton were reconnected with Brian while Paramedic Aaron Sackman was reconnected with Ian. Both men suffered cardiac arrests at home and thanks to the care given by the call takers, dispatchers, EMS and the ER teams at Hurley, both men survived and are home with their families! Events like these can be an important part of the healing process. Pictured with them are Supervisor, Wayne Blossom and Northern Operations Manager, Jeremy Compau.

We are proud to sponsor tonight's welcome dinner for the speakers of the World Trauma Symposium in Orlando. The symposium, presented by National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians alongside EMS World - Emergency Medical Services, starts tomorrow.

We're thankful to be part of the conversation on trauma care and EMS system design across the country. Medstar Paramedic Nate Korinek was nominated by the McLaren Flint ER staff for an EMS Exceptional Caregiver Award! They chose Nate because of his excellent communication and hand-offs, his clinical skills, judgement and decision-making, his compassionate patient advocacy and care and for going "above and beyond."

They stated "Nate's reports are clear, concise, and informative. He stays calm under pressure and is an exceptional medic who knows how to treat and complete interventions for his patients. Nate is patient, caring, knowledgeable, and amazing with clinical assessments. He is always a friendly face and very personable with ER staff."

Nate Korinek, a paramedic with MedStar, received the hospital's third-quarter EMS Exceptional Caregiver Award from McLaren Flint ER and Trauma program leadership and team members on September 17.
Recipients of this award are nominated by ER staff. One nominee had this to say about Nate: “His reports are clear, concise, and informative. He stays calm under pressure and is an exceptional medic who knows how to treat and complete interventions for his patients.” Congratulations!

Medstar paramedic and dispatcher, Andrew Graves, was named the 2026 EMS Practitioner of the Year by the Michigan Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (MAEMT) at the Michigan EMS Leadership Development Summit today in Lansing.

They said: "Our 2026 honoree has been in EMS for more than 40 years and exemplifies everything an EMS practitioner should be, and then some. He is a licensed paramedic and is also a dispatcher who is known for going above and beyond in his work. He blends his clinical experience with a genuine compassion for the patients that both he, and his agency serve. Whether he is directing resources during a peak on his shift, or setting a positive tone over the radio, he elevates the entire operation. His team told us that he represents the absolute best of our mission at the MAEMT, and the critical role that everyone on the team plays in emergency services."

This week, Henry Ford St. John Hospital recognized 2 Medstar crews for performing high quality care!

Paramedic Nick Montry and EMT Andrea Browne responded to an 88 year old patient complaining of weakness. Upon arrival, the patient presented with left sided weakness and facial droop. They did a rapid assessment, performed a 12-lead EKG, BGC and called report for early activation, once recognizing the possible stroke. The crew initiated an IV an rapid transport to the ER. Upon arrival the patient presented with an NIH score of 9 and a code stroke was immediately activated. The patient was taken directly to CT. TNK was administered within 30 minutes of arrival and a R MCA Thrombectomy was performed. The patient was discharged home just 3 days later with an NIH of 0 and deficit free.

Paramedic Will Quinn and EMT Scott Witt responded to a 44 year old complaining of chest pain. Upon arrival, the patient was sitting on his couch, awake and alert, stating the chest pains had began 3 days prior. They did a rapid assessment, performed a 12-lead EKG, and called report for early activation, after recognizing the STEMI on his EKG. They initiated an IV, administered ASA and Nitro that provided relief to the patient. The patient was evaluated by the Cardiology team and required an immediate cardiac catheterization. The patient suffered from an acute infarct with 100% occlusion to the mid left circumflex artery. The patient had a successful stent and balloon placed. What makes this call remarkable was the level of care in a short amount of time. In just 22 minutes, the crew performed their assessment, serial EKG's, critical medications, early activation, as well as rapid transport for definitive care. This call had a door to balloon time of 48 minutes, amazing!
