Mayfield Community Garden

Mayfield Community Garden The Mayfield Community Garden has been going strong since 2010. Charitable donations to the garden via Third Unitarian Church are fully tax deductible.

The Mayfield Community Garden grows food for a neighboring food pantry, beautifies its corner of Austin, Chicago, provides space and support for folks to grow their own vegetables and seeks to develop community through bimonthly gardening days. Since 2015, we have dedicated beds to growing food for the community through local food pantries. The Mayfield Community Garden thanks Third Unitarian Church for making its space available to the garden.

It is that time of year! Garden Schedule for the 2026 year.

The schedule for the rest of the year is:

· Seedling planting day - May 9

· Weeding Day - May 23

· Harvests: June 13, 27; July 11, 25 (Austin Garden Collective); August 8, 22; Sept 12, 26; Oct. 10 & 24

There are still beds available for rent. The deadline for last year's renters to confirm their intention to rent this year is April 30.

The Garden is waking up. Next Saturday is seed planting day and beds are still available. Today we got our new compost bins operational, but still needing a front and top. Also we hosted the University of Illinois Extension and the Austin Garden Collective for a giveaway of fruit trees to other community gardens. More photos to follow.

On July 19th the garden crew joined the Central Austin Neighborhood Association (C.A.N.A.) for their Art Fair. After a rainy start the crew served up chicken, corn on the cob, cold slaw and watermelon. The children (and adults). had a great time painting rocks and making beaded bracelets. The rocks will have a permanent home in the east garden, at the corner of Mayfield and Fulton.
