Devices 4 the Disabled

Devices 4 the Disabled Devices 4 the Disabled was founded by Ed Kane, who is in the late stages of ALS.

Devices 4 the Disabled empowers people with disabilities to thrive with mobility, independence, freedom, and dignity by collecting, refurbishing, and distributing medical equipment at no cost. When Ed was first diagnosed he had to pay $30,000 for a complex wheelchair out of his savings because his insurance wouldn't cover the cost and he couldn't wait for Medicare to help. He wants to save other disabled people from long waits for the equipment they need, and from high costs.

Ed Wehmer knows what it means to start small, believe in an idea and build something that matters.

Wintrust started with Ed and a folding table. He helped turn that folding table into one of the largest commercial banks in the country.

Maybe that’s why Ed has always understood D4D. We started pretty small too.

Over the years, Ed has shared his experience generously with D4D. His advice, his connections and his time, not only as Vice Chair of our Board of Directors, but as a friend.

We are proud to honor Ed as our 2026 Ed Kane Person of the Year, and grateful to Wintrust for hosting Our Cause 4 Celebration.

Thank you, Ed, for believing in D4D, and helping us build what comes next.

Better ergonomics can make work more comfortable and accessible.

D4D Executive Director, Jessica Corbus, presented that conversation at the IAHSE - Illinois Association of Hispanic State Employees 2026 Training Conference and Job Fair.

It was a great day of learning, connecting, and sharing practical ways to support comfort, movement, and participation at work.

Jessica is pictured with IAHSE Board Members Lubia Suterwala, Grecia Tures, and co-founder Blanca Vargas.

Thanks to IAHSE for having us!

Nearly 300 people came together to celebrate 10 years of D4D. But what we’ll remember most is the support in the room surrounding us.

Donors. Volunteers. Partners. Recipients and families. Friends who have been with us from the beginning, and those joining us for what comes next.

It takes all of us. Thank you for being part of it.

The real magic is the people. 💙

This video premiered at our Cause 4 Celebration and captures what D4D is all about: people helping people find greater independence, freedom and mobility.

The stories you’ll hear are why this work matters and why we’ll always say, “If you need anything else, we’re here.”

Lisa brought her brother Raymond to D4D looking for a better-fitting wheelchair.

When she saw the reclining chair, she immediately thought about what it could mean for him: Raymond can now go right into the barber without having to transfer to another chair.

We love making everyday things a little easier. 💙

We’re excited to kick off a wonderful night at Our Cause 4 Celebration! 💙

A huge thank you to Wintrust for hosting us and to Ed Wehmer, our 2026 Ed Kane Person of the Year, for his incredible support.

We’re also grateful for our healthcare partners and every supporter in the room tonight who helps us deliver what matters most: Mobility. Independence. Freedom. Dignity.

Here’s to a great night!

One encounter can change someone’s life.

D4D volunteer, Fabio, spotted Joel walking on old crutches with his children. Joel lost his leg 23 years ago. Fabio stopped him and mentioned D4D.

Joel showed up to our warehouse that week and left with the equipment he needs.

Someone else needs D4D today – they just may not know we’re here yet. Share this post and help us reach them.

“When you’re a parent of a child with special needs, there are a large amount of obstacles, and this just makes it easier.”

Clover is working toward walking, and now with this stander, she has the equipment she needs to keep going!

Thank you Marianjoy Rehabilitation for the referral!

Kathleen spent years trying to get the right mobility equipment through insurance. After a lot of calls and a lot of frustration, she found D4D.

She thought there had to be a catch. There wasn’t.

Now she can’t wait to pick her daughter up from school, go shopping together and get back to the life she's been missing.💙

Every student deserves to start school with what they need.

Asher needed a wheelchair before he could begin class. Insurance approval was months away, so Shirley Ryan AbilityLab referred his mom to us.

He left with a wheelchair and bath chair, ready to start alongside his sister. 💙 Have a great school year, Asher!
