Organization Overview, current areas of work:
• Economic Development: Operation of the Albany Park and Irving Park Special Service Area (SSA #60) and operation of the Albany Park Chamber of Commerce. North River Commission is a delegate agency of the City of Chicago working to support small businesses in our area.
• Community Development: North River Commission is the lead agency for Albany Park i

n LISC Chicago’s New Communities Program. Five times a year NRC brings together residents and their civic associations to discuss their concerns and develop solutions. In 2016 NRC has partnered with CMAP/Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning for a year-long process engaging the community in planning for the future.
• Housing: NRC developed Mayfair Commons Senior Housing Center at Elston and Lawrence in the 1997 and is now resyndicating the project in order to preserve it as affordable senior housing. NRC works with landlords and tenants to improve quality and maintaining affordability.
• Education: NRC partners with Illinois State University’s Teacher Pipeline to connect education majors to Chicago Public Schools, which encourages them to choose Albany Park schools for their first teaching positions. In addition, NRC collaborates with local universities to develop programs that benefit their students and surrounding communities. NRC also supports the 24 CPS schools in our area, by working with students, parents, teachers and administrators in improving the quality of education.
• Environment: NRC’s Environment Committee is currently focused on two projects, flooding solutions at the home and neighborhood levels and tree planting in parks and parkways.
• Arts and Culture: The objective of NRC’s Art & Culture Committee is to collaborate with artists and the community to enhance offerings in our area. NRC is engaged in a long term project with the Chicago Park District and Northeastern Illinois University in creating a sculpture park for the communities around Ronan Park.

The Seniors Serving Seniors event connects culinary students from culinary program with residents at NRC’s senior housing facility, Mayfair Commons. Every year, students in their senior year of high school will curate and prepare a delicious menu to serve the aging community at our senior housing facility in Mayfair. It’s a great way to connect the youth with older adults in a fun, purposeful way and we are grateful for the partnership with Roosevelt High School to help bring this event to life every year!

🫵 Do you want a FREE TREE on your property? 🌳 Last year we were awarded a $200,000 grant through The Morton Arboretum’s Chicago Region Trees Initiative to help expand our neighborhood tree canopy.

Our goal is to plant 250 trees by 2028 while making sure residents, youth, and underrepresented voices help shape where trees go.

Trees are available for private and institutional properties, and you can get involved too. Visit the link in our bio to explore our tree map, request a tree, or volunteer to help us grow a greener Albany Park. 🌱
