SOUL is an organization on the South Side and South Suburbs dedicated to the belief that people ought to have decent, affordable housing, access to healthy, nutritious food in every neighborhood, a clean environment so our children will be able to breathe the air and drink the water, public transit that allows us to get to job opportunities, a full employment economy so

everyone has the opportunity to work, and living wages so people who work full-time do not remain poor. Too many people are denied these basic rights because our communities don’t have enough power, and the people who have the power are not acting in our interests. SOUL is working to build a movement to create change on those issues, starting on the South Side and South Suburbs. SOUL’s membership includes religious congregations, affordable housing groups, block clubs, students, and neighborhood groups across the South Side and South Suburbs. Current campaigns include bank/corporate accountability, community involvement in education, sewer improvements in Riverdale, better public transit, green jobs in home weatherization, and access to healthy food.

We weren't quite done celebrating Juneteenth so we had to do it again with our folks at New Deliverance Church on 11200 S. State St. A good time with some great people. It's always a pleasure to be in community there. We really appreciate how many people were excited and ready to get involved. We want to thank all our survey participants, and congratulations to our raffle winners. We look forward to seeing you next time.

Art is political. Art is revolutionary. Artists will always find themselves seated in the intersection of creation and revolution. We at SOUL appreciate being a part of It’s On Us: A Day of Art and Action. We deeply appreciate all the artists willing to push the needle towards a reimagined future where we all live in liberated, well resourced communities.

In the wee hours of the morning, Illinois’ General Assembly passed a FY2027 budget that includes $1.5 million dollars to extend the Pretrial Success Pilot Program! While we began this session with a call to fully fund this program statewide, we are still incredibly excited that we have another yea...

“There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives,” the Rev. Jaime Fluker quotes activist and writer Audre Lorde.

We are proud to share that our Executive Director, Rev. Jaime Fluker, joined Nubia Batista Willman from Lantinos Progresando and Danae Kovac from Hana Center as guests on In the Loop with Sasha-Ann Simons to talk about intersectional solidarity.

When one community is under attack, we all are impacted.

In 2023 Illinois ended money bond, but release without support doesn’t set people up to succeed. Yesterday we hit the streets to collect signatures of support for the Pretrial Success Act. That’s why we are fighting for a fully funded Pretrial Success Grant Program. We’re looking to fully fund resources such as mental healthcare, substance use treatment, transportation and childcare for people awaiting trial. The letters we are collecting will be sent to our governor and state legislature to urge them to expand the Pretrial Success Act. Let’s set our community members up to flourish!
