The FSCC is working to create solutions to resolve some of the disparities and lack of resources in the neighborhoods that make up Far South Chicago. These communities combined consist of a population of over 76,000 hard-working individuals. Approximately 98% of those individuals are people of color
More than 65% are unemployed or not in the labor market. We have created 8 focus areas that key com
munity leaders, residents, and business owners will focus on to help create the Far South Chicago Quality of Life Plan (QLP):
Education
Housing
Youth & Family Service
Social Justice
Green Space & Technology
Economic Development
Health/Wellness & Mental Health
Environmental Health
Workforce Development
Tourism & Transportation
Why QLP:
A Quality of Life Plan will help leverage governmental initiatives, funding, corporate resources, and outside investments to strengthen our residents and communities. Our efforts will be to create a comprehensive plan that outline the support needed to make the far south communities a safe, healthy, affordable, mixed-income, sustainable and livable community. Creating and executing a QLP will also help leverage support and resources from the City of Chicago INVEST South/West initiative, as well as support campaigns and generate financial resources to rebuild the community. Why Now?:
The Far South has had very limited equitable investment/reinvestment in residential and local businesses in several decades, since the successful implementation of the community-led Roseland Plan for a Thriving Community in the 1990s. The lack of competitive educational opportunities and the lack of compliance with USEP regulations for hiring from the community continues to be an issue for the Far South Side. This has caused families to relocate and businesses to leave the community. What has the group done together in the past 3 years?:
• No Crime Day led by the 5th District Pastoral Committee (500+in attendance)
• Annual Juneteenth Parade & Festival (1000+in attendance)
• Faith-based Initiative Awareness (300+in attendance)
• Domestic Violence Awareness (300+in attendance)
• Pullman Health, and Wellness Food Festivals (300+in attendance)
• Back to School Fairs, Holiday Basket & Tree Giveaway (1300+ community residents served)
• Peace Rally (500+in attendance)
