June 2 was chosen as Lou Gehrig Day because it's the date Gehrig became the Yankees' starting first baseman in 1925, and the day he passed from ALS in 1941. It's one of only three league-wide tribute days in MLB history, alongside Jackie Robinson Day and Roberto Clemente Day. Pete Frates was a Boston College baseball captain diagnosed with ALS at 27. He never complained. Instead, he lit the match that became the Ice Bucket Challenge, raising over a quarter of a billion dollars worldwide for ALS research.

Every player across all 30 MLB ballparks will wear a custom No. 4 decal and red '4-ALS' wristband today. These three wear a little something extra.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Boston College High School & Catholic Memorial ALS Awareness Game.

The energy, support, and community shown throughout the day meant so much to the team and to everyone continuing the fight against ALS.

A special thank you to Zach Kennan, who, like Pete, starred on the diamond at both St. John’s Prep and Boston College, for throwing out the first pitch and for his continued support of the foundation.

The competition doesn’t end once the teams leave the diamond. Supporters can still make an impact by donating on behalf of either team and following along to see who is leading the fundraising efforts through the doubleheader campaign.
