Today marks 25 years since the U.S. invaded Afghanistan, launching what became the never-ending "Global War on Terror."

Over that time, two remarkable groups of peace advocates have gathered every week in Cleavland, Ohio and Birmingham, Alabama, defying the elements to witness against the seemingly endless cycles of conflict -- week after week, year after year, for 25 years.

"Neither of the vigils are large groups. Their power is not in their size, but in what holds the center," FCNL's Lindsay Bencick writes.

"Members have come, gone, and come, anchored by the message of peace that has been publicly delivered each week at markets and intersections for over two decades."

On Saturday, May 16th, residents across the Hudson Valley gathered in Middletown to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the Nakba and march in solidarity with Palestinians.

Beginning at Thrall Park, participants assembled before marching one mile through downtown Middletown carrying Palestinian flags, banners, and signs while demanding and an end to U.S. military support for Israel.

Organizers criticized Middletown officials for refusing to pass a ceasefire resolution, instead adopting a broader resolution calling for “global peace and the release of all hostages”, which many city residents viewed as inadequate in the face of the genocide unfolding in Gaza.

The march concluded peacefully, with organizers pledging to continue local actions calling for Palestinian liberation and an end to U.S. military aid to Israel amid escalating regional violence affecting Lebanon, Syria, Iran, and neighboring countries across the Middle East.
