Hudson Valley Basket Brigade

Hudson Valley Basket Brigade Jean Elie was a four-year-old boy in Haiti who had an idea to help his starving family. What a beautiful act of love for such a young child.

The Hudson Valley Basket Brigade helps families and individuals struggling with food security throughout the year by hand-delivering a basket full of groceries and distributing food to those in need. Having had two of his siblings die of the effects of malnutrition/starvation, he would sacrifice his school snacks and bring them home to share. Unfortunately, Jean Elie ultimately sacrificed his life

for his family when he himself died from the effects of malnutrition. It is in the giving spirit and inspiration of Jean Elie that the Hudson Valley Basket Brigade was born. The Hudson Valley Basket Brigade supports people with food insecurity in the Hudson Valley, primarily during the holiday seasons. Funds are used for the purchase of food for baskets with holiday meals to be distributed to families in need and to support other initiatives to feed the hungry in the region throughout the year. The Hudson Valley Basket Brigade is associated with the International Basket Brigade, providing baskets of food and household items for an estimated 2 million people annually in countries all over the world through local grassroots efforts.

Baskets getting staged for distribution. Some of the baskets made with your donations this year are seen in the photos and video below. These baskets are going only to families with very significant and urgent need. Families who can't drive, have no transportation, have lost their income, are battling illness, have lost their homes, and other heartbreaking situations. Thank you to all the donors and volunteers who made this possible!

The pineapples we’re giving away this year came all the way from Ecuador and Costa Rica, thanks to Chestnut Hill Farms in Coral Gables, FL. This stack alone has more than one hundred pineapples. As the camera pans down, it’s a reminder of how many families these boxes will impact.

We’re working hard to make sure every local family we serve gets a full Thanksgiving meal (and then some), and we still need help to make it happen. If you want to be part of something meaningful, please donate at HVBasketBrigade.org/donate before Sunday. Even a small gift helps put real food on real tables.

How much do one hundred pineapples weigh? Let’s just say it’s a powerful reminder of how much we can lift when we do it together.

Our final push before Thanksgiving, and the need in Orange County is far greater than it has ever been. When you have more than you need, it's hard to imagine that many families simply cannot afford a holiday meal. But we meet those families every year.

Watch this basket come to life in the video. Every box, every can, every side dish is made possible by someone who clicked over to our website to help a neighbor.

You can have a direct impact. A small gift fills a basket. A basket changes a day. A day of kindness can change a season or even a life.

100% of your donation goes DIRECTLY to food for families in need. We still have more baskets to fill and we cannot do it without you.

⚠️Warning: this video may cause smiling, warm fuzzies, and sudden urges to spread kindness.

Here is a peek at one volunteer showing how our Basket Brigade magic happens. Shopping like a pro, packing baskets like a champ, and delivering joy across the Hudson Valley. Every basket is filled with food, gratitude, and a whole lot of heart.

A true grassroots effort. 100% volunteer-run, and 100% of every penny received purchases nothing but food for local families in need and surprises them with how much their community cares. We have no overhead, no salaries, no marketing expenses, no printing or supplies costs.

If this made you feel good, imagine how it feels to help make it happen.

🚨Critical Alert: The cuts in federal spending eliminated more than seven million pounds of food to our region, or more than 5.8 million meals, according to the Hudson Valley Regional Food Bank. Many families in the area are hanging on by a thread - one car issue away from having services shut off or being unable to buy food for their families. This year, the need is the greatest it has ever been since the Hudson Valley Basket Brigade started over ten years ago. If everyone who read this gave $1 we would be able to deliver to more families this year than we ever have before. 100% of every penny received is used to purchase food baskets for local families. None of our volunteers are paid a single penny. This is truly a grassroots community initiative. If you've been blessed in life, please consider a donation here: https://hvbasketbrigade.org/donate/

🏆What an astounding success this year's Thanksgiving Basket Brigade was. Thank you so much to all who helped contribute to the Thanksgiving Baskets that went out to those in need. 🦃

Whether it was an online donation, food donation, basket donation, shopping, assembling, delivering, or a social media interaction, it is so appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you to the non-profit organizations that helped connect us with the families and assist in the deliveries (CCM / HE, etc).

We will be continuing to do our good work in December and beyond. If you weren't able to contribute to the Thanksgiving food baskets, you can still give online at https://hvbasketbrigade.org with a tax-deductible donation to help send food to local families in Orange County throughout December in time for the holidays.
