Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue ADOPT A PET - To be considered to adopt one of our babies, please fill out an APPLICATION. Adopting any animal takes a lot of commitment.

We are dedicated to rescuing and caring for Maltese and other toy breeds (as room allows) who are either rescued from shelters, found as strays, or no longer wanted by their family (owner). MS Word and PDF versions of the application are also available for download. We require an application, reference check, home visit, and adoption donations that vary, depending upon the age of the animal and the general health of the dog. Each dog has had all vaccinations, been dewormed, heartworm tested (and treated if necessary), dental (if needed), spay/neuter, and any other medical attention he/she needs. The adoption donation helps recover a PORTION of the money spent on each rescued animal. We are committed to try to find the best home possible for each of our little ones so that they don't end up in a similar situation down the road. Out-of-state adoptions are possible; however, the approved adoptive home is responsible for making the necessary arrangements to pick up their new little one. The new owner is required to help with the transportation of the dog though, as we will not ship them. Additionally all dogs requiring transportation must have a crate or seatbelt harness. We need COMPLETED applications, we cannot start the adoption approval process unless we have a fully completed application. If you do not supply complete information on your APPLICATION, we do not have time to track it all down. Vet contact information on your application is very important, please include it. PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE BIO OF ANY DOG IN WHICH YOU ARE INTERESTED SINCE THERE MAY BE ADOPTION RESTRICTIONS. WE PREFER TO ADOPT TO HOMES WITH CHILDREN ABOVE THE AGE OF 10 YEARS. EXCEPTIONS CAN BE MADE DEPENDING UPON THE ANIMAL AND HOW FAR THE POTENTIAL FAMILY IS LOCATED FROM THE FOSTER HOME. Homes with fenced yards are given preference to those without (all other things being equal). SCMR does not adopt to homes with Electric Fences*. Large aggressive dogs or predatory animals can easily get in to the yard to hurt, fight even injure dogs confined with this type of fence. In addition to injury or even death, dogs are more accessible to thieves. *To clarify, "Electric Fencing" is the electronic, wireless underground fence that keep dogs in but will not keep other animals out. Please understand that this is a volunteer effort and we all work full time in addition to doing rescue. Any help in speeding up the adoption process is appreciated. We receive an average of over 2000 HITS A DAY and many emails! We will get back to you as soon as possible. ** NOTE** We do NOT encourage giving pets as GIFTS. However, you may pay the adoption fee as a 'gift' for your special someone, but we will require an adoption application to be completed by the adopter (recipient of your 'gift'). Our dogs come to us from various sources including shelters. We do not always know the full history of the dog, some have come from abusive or neglectful situations. We will share as much information on the dogs as we can with 'approved prospective homes'. Our dogs live in foster homes in several states. We are always in need of great foster homes. We are sorry, but there is no "shelter" available for you to visit. When an application is approved, the home check goes well, and all vet references and application information checks out, a signed and notarized contract is required to finalize the adoption process. MS Word and PDF versions of our Adoption Contract are available for download.

Lucy Rose needed a nap after her long day at the veterinarians office yesterday, so her foster mom got in a cozy chair with her and soon, they both fell asleep together, taking a long, much needed nap. This shows how trusting Lucy Rose is!

Lucy Rose is on her way for her neurological exam. They may keep her overnight for observation, depending on her initial exam.

Please keep her in prayer for a positive report, and that we can proceed with her hip surgery!

UPDATE - Lucy Rose is headed home, she was examined and without an MRI, the neurological issues are inconclusive, but she is okay for the Doctor to proceed with her surgery; while she is under sedation, if things are going well, they may can do her spay and possible dental. We know she will be monitored closely, for the Doctor to know how long she can be under the anesthesia. The surgery is scheduled for November 3.

10/14/26 - FYI regarding the Go Fund Me for Lucy Rose - we have learned that we will need a little more information in order to send thank you's for tax purposes.

If anyone needs a confirmation email for tax purposes, please reply to the email that was sent out from Go Fund Me, that will then unlock the ability for us to send the needed tax info.

We did do the Go Fund Me thank you, but we don't have access to the emails of donors to email directly. So please reply to their email and then we can send the tax donation information.

Many thanks to everyone that donated, we will have more information Thursday about Lucy and the care we are planning to provide her.

10/6/26 - UPDATE for Lucy Rose

Lucy is doing great, and is getting around pretty good considering how her hip and knees are. Her URI has cleared up, and now we can focus on her hip and knees.

She has her next appointment on October 15, to be evaluated for any neurological issues that she may have, which will help us to know how to best help her.

Look how relaxed she looks in her new picture!

May thanks to all her friends support!

9/30/26 - update for Lucy Rose

Today was her 3rd appointment with a veterinarian, it did not turn out like we thought it would.

When Lucy Rose saw the other veterinarians, she was not her self, she was feeling bad, and probably in shock with everything, being in animal control, being moved to a foster home, then seeing doctors. So they did not observe what the doctor saw today.

The Doctor today is saying Lucy Rose may have neurological issues with her whole body, that we need to get checked out. There is some blindness, teeth grinding, circling, poor reflexes, eyes that don't match up, which are all indicators of something neurological going on. The Doctor also estimated her age to be around 8 years old.

Depending on that office visit, will help to determine what we need to do for Lucy Rose.

The patellas are so bad, that they may not be able to be fixed, grade 4//4, it could be congenital.

It is unknown what is causing the neurological issues, it could be some sort of clinical disease, and it could be from trauma to the head, such as being hit by a car, and that would explain the dislocated hip.

We already have an appointment at the University of Georgia Animal Hospital, so we will keep everyone posted about their exam.

Lucy is happy now, wagging her tail, being playful, she is loving life now, see her new video taken Tuesday!

Many thanks to everyone that has donated to her care!

9/28/26 - UPDATE for Lucy Rose
We are getting more donations and we so appreciate the help!

Lucy has an appointment on Wednesday, and we pray for positive news, that she will be able to have the much needed surgery soon!

We have now raised about $8000, we will know better how much more we need, after her Wednesday appointment.

Look at her video! Isn't she cute trying to get to that big bad shoe!!, and so happy! She is on pain meds, so she is okay, she is being kept quite and is happy when she can go outside for a little sunshine, playtime, and potty time! her foster family is loving her and doing a great job with her!

The video also shows how bad her knees are and how much she needs the surgery.
