🀝 Come for Knowledge, Leave with Your People 🀝

Some of the most valuable parts of the Southern Family Farmers & Food Systems Conference happen outside the classroom β€” over coffee, during a shared meal, or in conversations with someone who understands the challenges and joys of working in agriculture.

Meet new collaborators, find mentors and resources, reconnect with old friends, and become part of a statewide community at these networking events:

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Farmer Veteran Coalition Breakfast
🌱 Community Seed Social with Central Texas Seed Savers
β˜• FARFA Coffee & Community
πŸ›οΈ Exhibit Hall (60+ vendors)
πŸ”¬ OFRF Networking Session
πŸ₯‚ Gather & Graze featuring music, drinks and dinner!

Over the past few weeks, we've talked about why independent farms matter and some of the challenges farmers and ranchers face. Behind those challenges are real people trying to make a living, care for the land, and keep their operations going. We can't fix every problem in agriculture, but we can help.

Sometimes that looks like a farm tour. Sometimes it's Groundwork. Sometimes it's connecting someone with the right information or the right person to call. The goal is the same: helping farmers keep farming.

We want to hear from you!

Farming and ranching are challenging enough without the added complexity of navigating regulations, funding opportunities, and marketing. To better support you, we are developing the Farmer Help Desk. Our goal is to ensure this resource is genuinely useful and truly serves the farming community.

To help us build this out, please share your insights:

- What do you wish you had known when you were first starting?
- What resources would have made your life easier?
- What would help you most when you are feeling stuck or planning your next step?

Please feel free to send us a message or leave a comment below with any suggestions or features you would like to see included.

Farming comes with a lot of questions.

Sometimes you know what you need β€” and sometimes you don't even know that there might be something like a Farmer Help Desk β€” a resource to help connect producers with the information, resources, and people who can point them in the right direction.

It's still taking shape, and we want to make sure we build it right. In our next post, we'll be asking farmers and ranchers what they'd find most helpful β€” so stay tuned, and make sure you're following along.

Let's talk about Groundwork.
Groundwork is CHFS's 12-week hybrid program designed for beginning and expanding producers. It's where farmers come to learn practical skills, connect with experienced mentors, and build a stronger foundation for their operation.
Because farming doesn't come with an instruction manual β€” and nobody should have to figure it all out alone.
Our next cohort kicks off this fall in Central Texas. If you're ready to grow your skills and connect with a community of fellow farmers, we'd love to have you!

Meet Octavio. He'll tell you in his own words what it means to have a community behind you as you build something from the ground up. Watch his story, then help us support more farmers like him. Every donation to CHFS goes toward making support and education for farmers more accessible.

"The farm visits were definitely a highlight for me. It was really inspiring to see how different people run their operations and approach things in their own unique ways."
Every farm tells a different story β€” and every visit is a chance to learn something new. Help us bring more people to the farm and keep these experiences alive. Your donation makes it possible.

🌟 KEYNOTE SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT 🌟
We’re honored to welcome Sallie Calhoun as a keynote speaker at the 2026 Southern Family Farmers & Food Systems Conference.
Sallie is the owner and manager of Paicines Ranch, a 7,600-acre ranch in central California, and a nationally recognized leader in regenerative agriculture, impact investing, and climate-focused philanthropy. Her work centers on improving soil health, supporting resilient agricultural systems, and harnessing the power of healthy soils to benefit farmers, communities, and the environment.

Through her leadership of the No Regrets Initiative, Sallie works to create meaningful change in agriculture by investing a wide range of resources β€” human, natural, financial, and philanthropic capital β€” into solutions that strengthen both people and the land.

Before becoming a rancher, Sallie spent nearly 25 years as an engineer, executive, and technology entrepreneur, serving as COO/CFO of Globetrotter Software. Following the sale of the company in 2001, she and her husband purchased Paicines Ranch, launching a new chapter that has included regenerative ranching, organic farming, grass-fed beef production, holistic management, impact investing, and agricultural advocacy.

Today, Sallie serves as Managing Member of Cienega Capital and President of the Globetrotter Foundation. She has also served on numerous nonprofit and for-profit boards advancing regenerative agriculture, land stewardship, and rural communities.

Join us as Sallie shares insights from her unique journey as an entrepreneur, rancher, investor, and advocate working to build a more resilient and regenerative food system.

Farmer Wade Salami tells us what it’s like to find Community as a farmer…
"Attending the CHFS workshop at HOPE for Small Farm Sustainability was an invaluable experience for me. Beyond the insights, the connections I made with fellow farmers and experts in the field were equally impactful. I left feeling motivated and equipped to make meaningful changes that will benefit my farm and the community"
