A resident of the 𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗶𝘅 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮, James provided supplies to the Patriot cause during the American Revolution. But his service was not an isolated family story—the Bryson brothers stood together in the struggle for American independence.
𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗺𝗮𝗻, daughter of Elizabeth “Granny” Countryman, whose own story has become part of the lore surrounding the 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝘄𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 🇺🇸
𝐴𝑐𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑎 1974 𝑎𝑐𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝐴𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑒 𝐶𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑧𝑒𝑛-𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑤𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝐽𝑜ℎ𝑛 𝑃𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑖𝑠, Granny Countryman remembered the day of the battle vividly. While the fighting raged, she carried water from a nearby spring to the Patriot soldiers, making countless trips with a wooden bucket and gourd dipper. She later recalled that her sons John and Andrew Countryman, her son-in-law James Holmes Bryson, and five of his brothers were among the men fighting with their long ri**es.
The family story continued after the Revolution. 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐫, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐲𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚, where they established new homes and continued building the nation they had helped secure.
