On June 13, 1777, the Marquis de Lafayette arrived in America and joined the Continental Army as a major General, despite King Louis' wishes.

Despite opposition from King Louis XVI of France, Lafayette was determined to fight for American ideals and liberty. As a major general in the Continental Army, he played a significant role in securing victory for the Americans in several battles. Lafayette also formed a close friendship with Thomas Jefferson, who later invited him to visit his home at .
