🌱💚 Community Shout-Out! ♻️

A BIG thank-you to our amazing Cambridge Farm to School board members Bob Gould and Adam Gould who stepped up to help build a composting bin for dry materials! 🙌

This project not only highlights the support of board members, but the collaborative partnerships of the Farm to School Program and Severson Learning Center.

It takes a community working together to turn good ideas into meaningful action, and we’re so grateful for the time, talents, and helping hands that make projects like this possible.

This new bin is another step toward supporting our school composting efforts, reducing waste, and creating valuable resources for our school gardens. 🌻🥕
These behind-the-scenes efforts matter, and we’re thankful to have board members who are willing to roll up their sleeves and get things done!

Cambridge Farm to School is looking for 1–2 passionate individuals to join our Board of Directors and lead one of our core programs!

🌱🥕 At Cambridge Farm to School, learning about food goes far beyond the classroom!

Through our four core programs — Chef in the Classroom, Chef at the Pantry, Hydroponics, and Green Team — kids get hands-on experiences that connect them to real food, their community, and the world around them.

From cooking and tasting to growing fresh food and exploring sustainability, we’re helping kids build healthy habits, develop new skills, and discover where their food comes from. 💚

🥕🍲 A little bit of garden magic, a lot of teamwork, and one very special soup!

For the first Chef in the Classroom experience of this school year at Cambridge Elementary, Chef Gene joined our kindergarteners for a delicious adventure inspired by Stone Soup, the classic children’s story about resourcefulness, cooperation, and community.

The excitement began even before the cooking! Our young chefs had previously picked carrots and potatoes from the Cambridge Elementary school garden, bringing their own freshly harvested ingredients from garden to pot. 🥕🥔

Just like the villagers in the story, students discovered that when everyone contributes a little something, we can create something wonderful together! With Chef Gene’s help, they made their very own Stone Soup and experienced firsthand how sharing, curiosity, and teamwork can turn simple ingredients into a meal to enjoy together.

And what did our little chefs think of their creation? Their reviews say it all! ❤️

💬 “Thank you!”
💬 “I love the soup! And I didn't even get the stone! Where is that stone?”

A big thank-you to Chef Gene for making this first Chef in the Classroom experience so memorable! From garden-grown vegetables to enthusiastic taste testers, our kindergarteners learned that cooking is about more than food — it’s about trying new things, sharing with others, and creating something special together.

Here’s to a school year full of delicious discoveries, hands-on learning, and happy little chefs! ✨

🌱Help Us Grow the Program🌱

We’ve got one hydroponic tower. We’ve got kids who are excited to learn. And we’ve got plans to grow!

Cambridge Farm to School is looking for volunteers to help us build on the success of our hydroponics program at Cambridge Elementary School.

We’re looking for two kinds of volunteers:
🌱HYDROPONIC GROWING STEWARD🌱
A hands-on coordinator who can oversee the growing cycle, work with students and staff, keep the system healthy, and help us plan for future expansion.

Approximately 1–5 hours per week.

🌱HYDROPONIC GROWING SUPPORT🌱
Hands-on helpers who can pitch in with routine maintenance, water and nutrient checks, cleaning, planting, harvesting, and keeping those plants happy.

Typically 1–2 hours at a time, as needed.

No hydroponics experience? No problem. Training and support are provided!
Our goal is to expand this program into more schools and community locations, giving more kids the chance to grow, harvest, taste, and learn about where their food comes from.

If you’ve got a green thumb, a curious mind, or just want to help, there’s a place for you.

🍃GREEN TEAM🍃

Getting kids involved in making a difference, one lunch at a time! Here is a little about our Green Team program.

Green Team is a group of volunteer 3rd through 5th graders at CES who help their friends make good choices when sorting and throwing away their lunch waste. But they do a whole lot more than that!

Each year, the Green Team chooses a project to dig into and learn about. Last year, their focus was hydroponics. They learned how the machine works, how plants grow, and then put that knowledge to work by growing and harvesting lots of lettuce for the CES lunch program!

They also take the compost out to the outdoor composters every day. That compost will eventually become soil for the school’s Blue Jay Garden.

And the projects don’t stop there! Past Green Team projects have included:

➡Creating an alternative recycling program for items like toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, dental floss, food pouches, and drink pouches

➡Diving into the science of composting and studying how long different items take to break down for a science fair project

➡Redesigning the school’s waste station to make it easier and more useful for students

The Green Team meets monthly, giving kids the chance to learn, take action, and see the impact of the choices they make every day.

Pretty awesome work for a group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders!

Looking for a meaningful way to give back, meet great people, and make a real difference in your community? Cambridge Farm to School is looking for volunteers to help grow our programs and support hands-on food education in the Cambridge School District.

Volunteers help bring our mission to life through classroom activities, program support, organizing and coordinating events, marketing and social media, and behind-the-scenes support. Whether you love working with kids, enjoy planning and organizing, have creative skills, or simply want to be part of something positive, there’s a place for you at Farm to School.

Our programs connect students to the full food cycle—soil, planting, harvesting, cooking, healthy eating, and composting—while building community and caring for the environment. Volunteering with Farm to School is flexible, rewarding, and impactful.

No experience needed—just a desire to learn, help, and be part of a growing community.

WE ARE SEEKING A NEW BOARD MEMBER
We’re growing, and we’re looking for another set of hands, ideas, and energy to help us keep it moving.

Cambridge Farm to School is seeking engaged, community-minded individuals to join our working Board of Directors. Board members play an active role in shaping and running our programs while helping guide the organization toward its five-year vision.

As a board member, you’ll collaborate with a passionate team to oversee and support our core programs—Chef in the Classroom, Chef at the Pantry, Hydroponics, and Green Team—while strengthening our impact within the Cambridge School District and broader community. Opportunities include program planning and coordination, classroom involvement, outreach,, marketing, and organizational development.

This is a hands-on role ideal for people who care about food education, sustainability, community connection, and creating meaningful learning experiences for kids. No prior board experience is required—just a willingness to participate, contribute ideas, and be part of a team working toward real, local impact.
