THIS SATURDAY!!! Join us for Falloween at The Birdwatchers Store Saturday, October 17th from 11-2pm!! You can stop in anytime throughout the event to check out our kids craft table, scavenger hunt, and store specials! Wildbird Recovery will be set up with information about their important work and will have several live birds! Butler Birder’s Club will also be set up and will be leading our bird walks around the BWS 3.5 acre property: kids bird walk is at 11am, adult bird walk is at noon!!! Sourdough Dreams will have a booth out front with her delicious baked goods for sale!! Teri Ackerman - Author and her dog Rusty will be set up in the store with her book series!! The admission fee is only $5 per person and will be donated to Wildbird Recovery. There is no registration required for this event, just stop on out! We hope to see you here, 630 New Castle Rd Slippery Rock, PA, for a Saturday of fall fun! Costumes are welcome!!!

Birdability Week events are happening in communities across the country during October! 🎃
Hosts are planning outings and gatherings with access in mind, including events with paved or hard-packed routes, stationary birding, seating, loaner equipment, shorter distances, flexible pacing, and clear information that helps people decide what works for them.

This morning we braved the weather for the Big Sit! Despite the rain and wind, we still gathered 18 species including Northern Harrier, Lincoln’s Sparrow, and a Spotted Sandpiper. We’ll try this event again in the spring and hope for better weather ☺️

Have you heard about the changes this year?

New regulations require ALL state game lands users NOT engaged in hunting, trapping, or fishing to wear fluorescent orange from October 1 through January 31.

Users are required to wear a minimum of 250 square inches of fluorescent orange on head, chest, and back combined OR a fluorescent orange hat.

Here are some extra tips for enjoying state game lands this fall:

- If you have a pet with you, we highly recommend a vest, harness, leash, or bandana.

- Backpacks can limit your 360 degrees of visibility. Add a bandana or covering to your backpack to ensure you're seen.

- Even if you’re horseback riding, you’re REQUIRED to meet orange requirements, regardless of safety equipment being worn. It’s suggested to have orange on your horse as well.

Our goal is to ensure ALL users, hunters and non-hunters alike, are as safe as possible on state game lands 365 days a year!

As a reminder, be respectful when using public land as other outdoorsmen and women may be nearby. Be mindful of current open seasons and be aware of your surroundings.

What to expect for the Big Sit this weekend -

Parking: There is a small gravel lot. My yellow car will be there to help you locate it.

Restrooms: There are none onsite but Sheetz is located nearby in Slippery Rock.

What to bring: Bring a chair, binoculars, water, & an umbrella as it may rain.

What we’ll have: I’ll bring some coffee! I’ll also have a scope we can all use.

I’ll be there from 7-12. Stop by any time during these hours and stay as long as you’d like. We’ll be birding from a 17 foot circle next to the parking lot.

Last weekend we had a Fall Migration Bird Walk on Moraine’s North Shore. We saw lots of great birds including Black-throated Blue Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and a Merlin flying overhead! One attendee even spotted a White-throated Sparrow! These sparrows are winter birds in our area so spotting one is a sure sign the seasons are changing!
