World Migratory Bird Day 2026
Every Bird Counts: Your Observations Matter
WMBD is taking place on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at the Frick Environmental Center, from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

World Migratory Bird Day is an international day of awareness for bird migration and conservation. The theme for World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2026, "Every Bird Counts - Your Observation Matter" highlights the role of public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations and their habitats and factors that impact their populations and contribute to our knowledge about how to protect them. Community science, ranging from backyard bird counts to large-scale coordinated surveys/schemes, provide information on species distribution, abundance trends, migration timing, and breeding success.

On Saturday, May 9, in partnership with community organizations, we’ll host activities at the Frick Environmental Center celebrating the wonderful bird diversity in our backyards. Enjoy various activities for learners of all ages, from fledgling to adult and deepen your appreciation for our avian friends.

Be a part of birding’s biggest team! Global Big Day is an annual celebration of the birds around you. No matter where you are, go outside on 9 May, help celebrate World Migratory Bird Day, and share the birds you find with eBird.

Participating is easy—you can even be part of Global Big Day from home. If you can spare 5 or 10 minutes, report your bird observations to eBird online or with our free eBird Mobile app. If you have more time, submit several checklists of birds throughout the day. You never know what you might spot. Your observations help us better understand global bird populations through products like these animated abundance maps brought to you by eBird Science.

Last year, Global Big Day collected more data about birds on a single day than ever before. More than 1.7 million people participated in the celebration, observing more than 7,900 and setting new world records for a single day of birding.

We had such a great time attending the 2026 Toast to Tourism event at the Penn Theater in Butler, PA put on by Experience Butler County Pennsylvania! This was my first time attending since taking over The Birdwatchers Store in October and it was such a wonderful event highlighting Butler County businesses! Hope, BWS employee and my mom, attended with me and we sat near Jen, who founded the Butler Birder’s Club. The Birdwatchers Store received a grant from Experience Butler County to improve and add to our existing sign to make it easier to see for passersby and to show off The Birdwatchers Store name. I am so thankful to this wonderful organization for this opportunity! Jen and the Butler Birder's Club also accepted a grant in collaboration with the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania to bring four nature programs to Alameda Park this summer. How wonderful for us and for you! Keep an eye out for our new addition to our sign coming this summer. If you don't already, give Butler Birder’s Club a follow and check out their website. They put on some amazing birding programs and events. Stop in to The Birdwatchers Store Monday-Saturday from 10-5 just outside of Slippery Rock, PA to see what we have for you! And as always, SUPPORT LOCAL!
