At a ceremony on September 28, Assistance League of Montgomery County named the Honorable Judge Kathleen Hamilton its Hometown Hero for the 2026 Stars of Service campaign honoring America's 250th anniversary.

Judge Hamilton has served on the chapter's Advisory Council for 25 years, providing valuable insights and support to the organization as it continues to grow and serve Montgomery County residents. Her volunteer record beyond Assistance League reads like a roadmap of this community: President of the Conroe Symphony Board, decades with the Conroe Noon Lions Club, current Vice Regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas at Sacred Heart Church, and service on the Dispute Resolution Center’s Board. This year, she has been honored with the Will Harrison Award of Civility from the Montgomery County Bar Association, the Women of Distinction Award from the Montgomery County Women’s Council of Organizations, and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Isaac Conroe Founder’s Day celebration, cementing her lifetime dedication.

“Today is about the 25 years she’s given to Assistance League of Montgomery County Non-profit, to its mission, and to the people we serve,” said Molly Parkhill, President.

Judge Hamilton briefly spoke about her history with Assistance League and concluded by noting the impact the organization has had in helping those it serves lead better lives. “They tried to bury us, but they didn’t know we were seeds,” she said in her message to keep growing and serving.

Member Spotlight: At 90 years young, Peggy Russell continues to serve! 💙

Peggy, a member of Assistance League® of St. Louis, doesn't let macular degeneration slow her down. During Operation School Bell® measuring sessions, she greets students from her rolling chair, chatting and laughing with them while they wait in line and then directing them when it's their turn to be measured for new school clothes and shoes. 👟👕

"The kids are such a hoot. They make me laugh and I love them," Peggy said. "One little boy looked at my face closely and told me I was really old. I laughed and agreed with him." 😄

On packing days, Peggy counts items and places them in duffle bags. At Books From Friends book fairs, she asks students to read to her, and they happily do. 📚 With help from good friends like Mary Reinagel, who often picks her up for volunteer shifts, Peggy keeps showing up and enjoying every minute.

Peggy was introduced at the last monthly meeting, when the Operation School Bell team was asking for more volunteers to do measuring and packing. “I think the message was: If I can show up, everyone else can, too.” 🙌

Her advice? “Everyone should get involved. Give as much time as you can. Once you get hooked, you can’t stop.”

Every child deserves to walk into a classroom ready to learn. Last school year, Assistance League® chapters across the country provided more than 464,000 students with new clothes, shoes, coats, and school supplies through Operation School Bell®, our signature program since 1958.

We're grateful to our longtime partner JCPenney and our new corporate partner , whose team assembled more than 1,400 hygiene kits for students.

📰 Assistance League® of Long Beach made headlines in the Long Beach Press-Telegram for surpassing its Long Beach Gives fundraising goal!

The chapter raised over $256,000, exceeding their $235,000 goal thanks in part to a couple of last-minute matching donations. Assistance League of Long Beach has participated in Long Beach Gives since the campaign began, when it raised about $10,000. This year's total shows just how much the chapter's reach and community support have grown.

With more than 700 members and 11 philanthropic programs, the chapter transforms the lives of children and adults across Long Beach. Its flagship programs include Operation School Bell®, which provides uniforms for Long Beach Unified School District students, and an orthodontics program that brings dental care to low-income families.

As the chapter's director of donor relations and development, Oscar Reyes, shared with the paper, the true value of Long Beach Gives goes beyond dollars: it's about visibility and sharing the chapter's mission with even more neighbors. 💙

What a night at Fred Meyer! 🍎✏️

Assistance League® of Klamath Basin held its Operation School Bell® event at their local Fred Meyer, where members clothed elementary students from three area schools so they can head into the year feeling confident and ready to learn.

The kids had a blast posing for photos with Freddie Bear, and national board member Sally-Ann couldn't resist grabbing a picture of her own! 🐻📸 The chapter was also honored to welcome Miss City of Sunshine, whose sparkling tiara left plenty of young shoppers wide-eyed.

A huge thank you to Fred Meyer for partnering with Assistance League of Klamath Basin and making this evening possible. Community partners like Fred Meyer help put new clothes, and big smiles, on the kids who need them most. 💙

⭐ Meet Doug Call, a Hometown Hero for Assistance League® of Conejo Valley! ⭐

As part of Assistance League's Stars of Service campaign celebrating America's 250th anniversary, chapters across the country are honoring the everyday heroes outside their membership who help make their work possible. On September 14, Assistance League of Conejo Valley recognized Doug Call, General Manager of their local JCPenney store.

For many years, Doug and his JCPenney team have partnered with the chapter to give countless children the chance to shop for new clothing with dignity, confidence, and excitement. What seems like a simple shopping trip can have a lasting impact on a child's self-esteem and readiness to succeed in school.

Chapter members say Doug has never treated the partnership as just business. He welcomes volunteers and children with kindness, patience, and genuine care, and he's even been known to jump on the registers himself so his cashiers can take a much-needed break.

Heroes don't always wear capes. Sometimes they simply show up year after year and make life a little brighter for others. Congratulations, Doug, and thank you! 👏

Lights, camera, back to school! Assistance League® of San Antonio made its first Operation School Bell® dressing day of the season one to remember. 🎒🔔

The chapter kicked off the school year with a back-to-school event that had the whole community talking. A local news station filmed a promo ahead of time, aired it the morning of the event, and then broadcast live from the celebration, helping share the impact of Operation School Bell with viewers across the city.

Adding to the excitement, members of the Sheriff's Department and H-E-B Buddy joined the fun, bringing energy, big smiles, and plenty of photo moments. The children were especially thrilled to meet these special guests as they picked out new clothes and got ready for a confident start to the school year.

It's been a busy week for Assistance League® chapter leaders! We kicked things off with our Chapter Presidents Training, followed by a Town Hall, and wrapped it up with Chapter Board Leaders Training. Thank you to everyone who joined us and brought your great questions, conversation, energy, and ideas! 💻

And we're not slowing down. This Friday, we're excited to host a Learning Circle featuring our partner JCPenney. There's still time to join us!

We are officially in the swing of things, and it shows. Across the country, Assistance League members are learning, leading, and helping in their communities every day. We're proud to be on this journey with you!

Assistance League® of North Coast is off and running for the 2026-2027 school year! 🏃‍♀️📚

👕 Emergency Clothing volunteers sorted new shorts, t-shirts, socks, and more for delivery to 37 elementary schools in Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Vista, so students who have clothing accidents at school have something fresh to change into.

💙Through Chapters for Children, Assistance League of North Coast joined four fellow Assistance League chapters at the Camp Pendleton Armed Services YMCA to provide underwear and water bottles to 475 TK-12th grade children of military families.

👟 On September 12, 700 Vista Unified students visited the Chapter House for Footsteps and Winter Warmth, where they picked out new shoes, socks, a sweatshirt or raincoat, a health kit, and a blanket. One mom shared that she received new shoes from the chapter as a child! 💙

Congratulations on an incredible start to the school year, and cheers to the many students who will step into the classroom with confidence! 🙌
