🐾 A little update on our not-so-little kitten! 🐾
Most of you have probably seen the story about the “kitten” who joined our friends at Six Kittens… only to turn out to be not quite the kitten everyone expected!

We received Damnit Bobby (we have been calling him DB for short) from Six Kittens and since arriving at Paws and Claws, DB has been VERY vocal, incredibly active, and absolutely obsessed with food. If there is one thing this little bobcat has made clear, it’s that he has plenty to say and no intention of going hungry. ❤️
Unfortunately, DB is also facing a much more serious challenge. He is currently completely paralyzed in his hind end with very little response to stimulus. Because of this, his prognosis is very guarded.

Our wonderful friends at Summit Veterinary Hospital were kind enough to take radiographs of DB for us. Thankfully, there were no obvious abnormalities seen on the X-rays that would explain his paralysis. At the moment we are taking things one day at a time and monitoring him closely.

Despite everything, DB is a fighter. He is bright, active, hungry, and VERY determined to make sure everyone within earshot knows exactly how he feels. 😂
We don't know yet what the future holds for this little guy, but we're going to give him every chance we can.

It’s unfortunately just a waiting game to see if any nerve damage can be repaired, but as long as he is comfortable, we are more than willing to give him all the time and care we can.

If it walks like a kitten and sounds like a kitten…it might be a bobcat. 🐾

Meet Damnit Bobby.
Because, damnit, Bobby…that’s a bobcat.

A former adopter reached out after her dog brought home this teeny, tiny “kitten.” She knew the little guy needed help, so she called us. And naturally, we said, “Yep.”
We were eager to help. We got him warm. We got him fed. We got him snuggled.
And then we looked at him a little more closely.

Those ears.
Those markings.
Those paws.
That kitten ain’t right.

We also noticed something much more concerning: Bobby didn’t appear to have normal control of his back legs. At that point, this was officially above our pay grade—and, more importantly, wildlife like Bobby requires specialized, permitted care.

So we reached out to our friends at Paws and Claws Wildlife Rehabilitation, who immediately stepped up. We kept Bobby warm, fed, safe, and sufficiently spoiled overnight, then got him transferred yesterday. He is now exactly where he needs to be, with wildlife professionals and veterinarians who can properly—and legally—evaluate and treat him.

And THAT is what rescue collaboration looks like.

Nobody has to be everything to every animal. One person noticed an animal in trouble. She called someone she trusted. We provided the care we could. Then another organization with the right expertise took the baton.

Different organizations. Different specialties. Same goal: give the animal in front of us the best possible chance.

It takes a village, y’all.
Or, as Hank Hill might say, I tell you hwhat. ❤️

Good luck, Damnit Bobby. You may not technically be one of our kittens, but you’ll always be an honorary one.

Squirrel baby season is here once again!

Our baby squirrels absolutely love the cozy nests our volunteers make for them! 🥰
Now that baby squirrel season is starting to pick up again, we wanted to share a few simple tips on what to do if you find a baby squirrel.

Before You Rescue, Try to Reunite!

If you find a baby squirrel on the ground, mom may be nearby! If the baby seems healthy and uninjured, we recommend babies should be given a chance to reunite with their mother whenever possible.

Reunification:
* Check if the baby is warm, if it’s not we recommend using a heating pad set on low or a water bottle filled with warm water to slowly warm the baby back up.
* Place the baby in a small, shallow box or basket lined with a towel or blanket (just make sure the baby is visible and not buried in the blanket)
* Keep it close to where you found it at the base of a tree. Try to watch from a distance to ensure predators do not approach the baby.
* Keep the baby warm! If the weather is cool (right now we all wish it was!) place a gentle heat source under part of the nest so the baby can move away from the heat if needed. With how hot the weather is, you will want to make sure the baby is in the shade so it doesn’t overheat.
* Play baby squirrel sounds. The Cu***ng Nuthouse Wildlife Facility on YouTube has an excellent baby squirrel reuniting video.
* Give mom some space: Leave the area and watch from a distance. Mom may be hesitant to approach if people are nearby.
* Give her time: Monitor from a distance for several hours during daylight. If mom returns, she will usually carry the baby back to the nest. If it is nighttime, bring the baby inside and keep it in a warm, dark, quiet place until morning.
* No reunion? If mom does not return after several hours, or if the baby is injured, cold, weak, or has been attacked by a cat or dog, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for help.
* Tree chopped down? Sometimes it takes mom a bit longer to grab the baby, but she often has a back up nest already made or will make a temporary one to move her babies too!

Never give a baby squirrel food or water before speaking with a wildlife rehabber!

This is a reminder to please never leave hair outside for birds to use as nesting material. While this is often done with the best intentions, it can unfortunately lead to a heartbreaking and sometimes fatal outcome for these sweet babies.
These two mockingbirds were found by a kind community member who noticed they were unable to separate from one another and reached out to us for help. Their parents were still feeding them, but as the babies continued to grow, they would not have been able to survive much longer in this condition.

The birds were tangled together by what appears to be human hair, which had wrapped tightly around their legs and cut off circulation. Without intervention, they likely would have died.

We know that people offer hair with the hope of helping wildlife, but there are much safer ways to support nesting birds. Please avoid putting out hair, string, yarn, dryer lint, or other similar materials that can entangle and injure wildlife.

It’s a little stinky in our rehab house, and we would love the help to deep clean it!

We are hoping for helping hands this Saturday, June 20th from 8:30AM-11:30AM.

While our normal volunteer program is paused, we are hoping for help with this deep cleaning project so we can complete it much faster than our current pace.

We had a wonderful donation of lots of worms from our wishlist by a kind follower, so I thought we would show one of our incubators that the worms are helping to support!
