There are a hundred ways healing happens at Different Day.

So many hard conversations and brave decisions.

But sometimes healing is soft blankets, quiet music, deep breaths, and stretching a little farther than comfortable, staying there and breathing.

This day we chose soft.

S*x trafficking doesn’t always look like what we’ve been taught to picture. And neither do the women who have experienced it.

At Different Day, we serve women whose stories may include trafficking, sexual exploitation, abuse, addiction, homelessness, incarceration, or other circumstances that have left them vulnerable to being used, controlled, or harmed.

At Different Day we provide safe, stable housing and walk alongside women as they do the much bigger work of healing, rebuilding independence, developing skills, finding meaningful employment, and creating lives that belong to them.

Part of our work is serving women.

But the other part is helping our community better understand the circumstances that made them vulnerable in the first place.

As we better understand exploitation, the better we become at recognizing it, preventing it, and supporting the women who have survived it.

There are a hundred little things that make a house feel safe.

A stocked fridge. A locked door. A prompt ride. An answered phone. Someone paying attention.

Demetris Collier is the Resident Advisor at Different Day, and day after day, she brings a calm, steady presence to a home full of different personalities, histories, triggers, needs, and emotions.

Demetris comes to this work with a wealth of knowledge and years spent learning how to support people navigating mental health challenges. It is knowledge she shares generously, not only with the women we serve, but with all who she encounters.

And you can see that wisdom in the way she moves through our home. Demetris can sit in the middle of complicated dynamics without choosing sides, adding to the noise, or losing sight of what matters.

She is fiercely protective, remarkably fair, and deeply committed to making sure the women in our home feel seen, cared for, and safe.

A peaceful home doesn’t happen by accident. It is built by people who know how to protect its peace.

Safety is more than just removing a threat. It’s surrounding someone with enough steadiness, tenderness, and care that her nervous system can finally begin to believe she is safe. Healing is what happens when safety and goodness become predictable.

At Different Day we’re not just trying to keep women out of danger. We’re trying to create the conditions where healing can actually happen.

Some of the most important moments at Different Day happen around tables.

Maybe it’s between appointments, or a conversation that takes longer than anyone expected. There might be tears and, because humans are funny this way, laughter five minutes after the tears.

Sometimes what’s needed is advice or a plan. Sometimes it’s simply another person willing to sit across the table and stay.

Healing doesn’t always look particularly impressive while it’s happening. A lot of the time, it looks like this: a cup of coffee going cold, a few crumpled tissues on the table, someone reaching across to hold a hand.

And a woman who doesn’t have to figure out what comes next alone.

There are seasons when the most important work isn’t moving faster. The most important work is becoming stronger.

Different Day has spent this season doing just that.

We have chosen mission over and over and over again.

We have never lost sight of why we exist:
-to help women heal,
-to provide safe housing,
-and to create pathways to meaningful employment.

That steady work has brought us here.

Tara steps into an organization shaped by an unwavering commitment to the women we serve with her own passion, heart, and expertise. We are so ready for all that comes next with Tara leading the way. She is perfect for this job.
