The photograph known as “The Falling Man” remains one of the most recognizable and controversial images associated with September 11. Captured by photographer Richard Drew at 9:41 a.m. on September 11, 2001, it shows an unidentified man falling from the World Trade Center's North Tower. The image generated intense criticism when newspapers published it, but over time it also became a stark record of the human cost of the attacks.

For years, people tried to determine who the man was. One theory eventually centered on Jonathan Briley, a 43 year old sound engineer who worked at Windows on the World. Investigative journalist Tom Junod found similarities between the man in the photographs and Briley, including his height, black high top shoes and an orange shirt he was known to wear. Still, the identification remains unconfirmed.

Briley's sister, Gwen Briley Strand, has now reflected on the photograph 25 years after the attacks. She remembers her brother as a deeply religious man and recalls a last minute Florida trip they took together shortly before September 11. For her family, the image is not simply a famous photograph. It is connected to a person they loved and a loss they have carried for a quarter century.
