Pellene is HOME!!

I am excited to share that Pellene’s latest update is a positive one. It’s been 5 days now that Pellene has been in hospital and she’s finally eating more consistently on her own. She received a visit from their neurologist today, who thought she might show symptoms of mild hydrocephalus, a condition where too much fluid builds up inside of the brain. At this time it’s just a theory, and she will need an MRI or CT scan to confirm. But they have started her on a medication that can help reduce fluid in the brain, and is also harmless if she does not have this condition, and she seems to be responding positively. They’re weening her dextrose as we speak and if all goes well I may be able to pick her up tomorrow 🤞🏻. We love you Pellene!!!

Thank you so much to everyone for cheering our little Pellene on! I got this update from the hospital today: they were unable to place a feeding tube. In addition to being so small, she also has an especially small nose that adds to the challenge. But they’re doing everything they can to encourage her to eat. She’s on IV fluids and dextrose and an anti-nausea med. She thankfully does not have pneumonia like Crescent did, and she has a solid red blood cell count and isn’t anemic. She’s negative for Parvo and negative for parasites. Like Crescent, she’s unable to regulate her blood sugar without dextrose, so weaning her off that will be the name of the game. But we desperately need her to eat more for that to happen. Since she has a stronger head start than Crescent did (she weighs 300 grams, vs. 200. And doesn’t have pneumonia), I am cautiously optimistic. We’re not ready to consider discharge yet, but we are stable. Thank you again to everyone who donated to her care. These hospitalizations are expensive, but she wouldn’t be able to make it without this care. ❤️

Thank you everyone for your kind words. Pellene is officially admitted to the critical care unit of the hospital. Where she’ll receive a feeding tube, IV fluids and medications, and some additional diagnostics. Please keep us in your thoughts ❤️

It seems we just can’t catch a break. Sweet Pellene is our second smallest kitten behind Crescent. And after her vaccine this week she abruptly lost 50 grams, something she can’t afford. I’m not going to wait for her to get worse before admitting her, so even though she is still alert, I’ve decided to hospitalize her. Please keep both of us in your thoughts.
