Bull Run Mountains Conservancy

Bull Run Mountains Conservancy Bull Run Mountains Conservancy is a nonprofit organization founded to protect the Bull Run Mountains

Bull Run Mountains Conservancy is headquarted on the southern 800 acres of the 2,500 acre Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve, owned and managed by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. This preserve is just 15 minutes from Manassas, Middleburg and Warrenton Virginia. As the most easternly chain in the Piedmont, the Bull Run Mountains protect unique ecosystems and headwaters of the Occoquan and G

oose Creek watersheds. In addition, Bull Run Mountains are home to a lot of iconic wildlife ranging from copperheads to gold finches. Over this unique geologic landscape, more than 1,000 species of plants and 112 specices of lichens have been formally documented. These mountains are also rich in Virginia and Civil War history. Our living history includes the following; Chapman Family Cemetery, Dawson Family Cemetery, the remains of "Meadowland" the Chapman family dwelling and ice house, hand dug quartzite quarry trench-the site of the a Civil War engagement which took place on August 28th, 1862. BRMC offers educational programs to adults and children, a strong link to local history, and the simple pleasure of walking trails in the Piedmont. At BRMC preservation does not mean a hands-off policy, but rather a focus on drawing people to appreciate the resources at hand and the completion of research to better understand and protect those resources. Our Youth Outdoors Program shows children that the outdoors is fun and exciting, and teaches them that we all have a responsibility to protect and to enhance our public lands and nature.

Summer is almost here!

💧As things heat up at the Preserve, we invite you to join us in learning about freshwater ecosystems in our streams and ponds during this month's Naturalist Walk with Bull Run Mountains Conservancy.

🏫 June also wraps up Bull Run Mountains Conservancy's Homeschool Programs for this school year, so make sure to tag along before school's out for the summer!

🔍We're excited to have The Clifton Institute out at Leopold's again as part of their annual dragonfly count, which is open to anyone who wants to help identify or learn more about dragonflies. Please note: this event is not solely hosted at Leopold's Preserve, you will be assigned a meeting location somewhere in our region.

Whether you tag along to a program or come out for a visit on your own time, we hope to see you at the Preserve soon! Register for these events and more with the Leopold's Preserve calendar: https://www.leopoldspreserve.com/calendar

A huge thank you to everyone who braved the pouring rain for our Town & Country Nature Walk at Hopewell's Sanctuary! We explored the property (slow and steady) and learned all about ferns, geology, and local history including a story about Mosby's horse corral!

We also want to thank our program sponsors: Wind River Fund, Spark Good, and the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation. Your support allows us to host wonderful programs like this!

Stay tuned for our next T&C walk in June!

Our all-ages Treat it Or Eat it Homeschool program is happening tomorrow at Leopold's Preserve!

Identifying plants and flowers can be tricky in the beginning without knowing what to look for. Come out tomorrow and learn how different characteristics, such as smell and feel, help you know whether to treat it or eat it! Photo Credits: Kevin Dwyer
