His name is Samuel. His family called him Sammy—and Ham Ham. ❤️
Samuel Rowan Lopez loved glazed donuts, Pop-Tarts, music, dancing, and giving kisses. He was curious, independent, sweet, and a little sassy—a little boy with a big personality and beautiful honey-brown eyes.
After we shared Maverick’s journey, Samuel’s mother, Shiann, reached out to us. She wanted us to know the precious boy whose donated heart gave Maverick a second chance at life.
But first, she wanted us to know Samuel for who he was.
“More than anything, I want people to know Samuel for the little boy he was.”
Born on January 21, 2025, Samuel filled his family’s days with joy. Just two days after his first birthday, he experienced a drowning accident. Despite intensive care, his brain injury was too severe, and he was declared brain-dead. On February 4, 2026, Samuel became an organ donor. His heart was transplanted into Maverick.
For Shiann, knowing another mother gets to watch her little boy grow brings comfort alongside the heartbreak of missing her own son. She celebrates Maverick’s chance to make memories while carrying all the dreams she had for Sammy.
She hopes Samuel’s story will encourage families to learn about bathtub safety, drowning prevention, and CPR, while helping others understand the life-changing gift of organ donation.
At Malachi’s House of Hope, we are honored that Shiann has trusted us to introduce Samuel to our community. As we support Maverick and his family, we also make room to remember the child and family whose lives are forever connected to theirs.
Please join us in remembering Sammy—the dancing, snack-loving, kiss-giving little boy who was, and always will be, deeply loved. ❤️
