Botulism can happen when the toxin gets into food or a wound. The condition also can happen when bacteria grow in the intestines of infants. Rarely, medical treatment or a bioweapon can cause botulism.
Health authorities are on high alert after a minor was diagnosed with a suspected case of botulism, marking what could be the first reported case of the dangerous illness on the Island in more than 20 years.
Health Secretary Víctor Ramos Otero confirmed that specialists have already sent the substance believed to have caused the infection to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for detailed analysis and confirmation.
⚠️ What is Botulism?
Botulism is an extremely rare but potentially deadly illness caused by one of the most powerful neurotoxins known to science. The toxin attacks the nervous system, causing progressive muscle paralysis, difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing. In severe cases, it can lead to respiratory failure and death if not treated immediately.
Medical experts emphasize that botulism is considered a medical emergency. Anyone experiencing symptoms or who believes they may have been exposed should seek immediate medical attention.
Authorities continue investigating the source of the suspected contamination while awaiting official laboratory results from the CDC.
