Did you know choking is the 4th leading cause of unintentional injury death in the U.S.? Thousands of lives are lost each year, and many more suffer lasting injuries.

👉 A simple way to check for choking hazards:
If it fits through a toilet paper roll tube, it’s unsafe for children under 3.

❌ Common hazards: whole grapes, seeds and nuts, hot dogs, popcorn, candy, coins, small toys, balls, and batteries.

✅ Cut food into small pieces, supervise mealtime, and keep small objects out of reach.

Every second matters. Awareness saves lives. 💙

We had an amazing visit with the Berkeley Heights Police Department this week! LifeVac devices are now in their frontline patrol vehicles, and we trained not just officers but members of the DPW, Recreation Department, Library, Township offices, and Berkeley Heights Public Schools. That is a whole community stepping up to be ready.

Four Years of Impact, Love, and Legacy

Four years ago, we held our very first fundraiser for Maverick’s Legacy, a bake sale held on the lawn of our children's daycare, Acorn Landing. It all began with a promise, to honor Maverick’s life by working to prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy we had.

Since then, together with our incredible supporters, we have:

💙 Performed countless free demos of how to use a LifeVac to save a life
💙 Donated countless toys to bring joy to children through Maverick's Birthday Toy Drives for Benny's Bodega and the Grateful Shed Food Pantry
💙 Privately helped several families during their own grief

Maverick's Footprints are spreading further each day👣💙

𝐍𝐒𝐁𝐏𝐃 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐕𝐚𝐜 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤’𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲

The New Smyrna Beach Police Department has equipped officers with LifeVac airway clearance devices through a partnership with Maverick's Legacy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing choking deaths through education, advocacy and the distribution of life-saving airway clearance devices.

To help make this initiative possible, NSBPD purchased 40 LifeVac devices at cost, while Maverick’s Legacy generously donated an additional 40 devices. Together, the effort ensures officers have access to LifeVac devices while on duty, providing them with an additional life-saving tool during choking emergencies.

Officers are often the first to arrive on scene, sometimes reaching medical emergencies before fire rescue personnel. In those critical first moments, having immediate access to a LifeVac device provides officers with another option to help someone experiencing a severe airway obstruction while awaiting the arrival of advanced medical care. LifeVac is not a replacement for standard choking rescue techniques, but may be used when traditional methods have been unsuccessful or cannot be performed.

Maverick’s Legacy was founded in memory of Maverick Chambers, a five-month-old infant who tragically died after choking in 2022. Although first responders arrived quickly and followed established emergency protocols, they were unable to remove the airway obstruction. His parents established the nonprofit with the mission of helping first responders and communities access additional tools that could help save lives in similar situations.

“We are grateful to Maverick’s Legacy for partnering with us to help equip our officers with LifeVac devices,” said Police Chief Chris Kirk. “Our officers are often the first to arrive at emergency calls, and having another tool immediately available during those critical first moments could make all the difference. This partnership helps us better serve and protect our community.”

The New Smyrna Beach Police Department thanks Maverick’s Legacy for its generosity and commitment to public safety. By equipping officers with LifeVac devices, NSBPD personnel are better prepared to respond when seconds matter most.

I used to not be able to watch these videos, because they triggered my PTSD very badly and brought a lot back from Maverick's choking accident. And while this is still a hard video to watch, I encourage you to watch it in full, as it shows the power of an airway clearance device in a choking emergency. Within moments this child was breathing again and blowing his nose. This save was not because of Maverick's Legacy and our work to provide LifeVac to police, but it is a really great example of exactly what we are working towards, a world without choking injuries and death.
