Sharing for awareness with watermelon season upon us. 🍉

❤❤Personal Story to share with you regarding the dangers of serving 🍉Chunks of Watermelon 🍉 to a young child in hopes of helping you keep your child safeR from this danger.

❤❤A few years ago, a close friend of mine gave her 3 yr old daughter watermelon. It was a beautiful day. Hubby was working in the yard. Friend was cutting up the 🍉watermelon on the counter in the kitchen and daughter was seated at the kitchen table.

❤❤My friend cut up a piece, handed it to her daughter and resumed cutting up the watermelon. She does not know how much time passed, perhaps a mere three seconds, but her little girl who sat a mere three feet in front of her was choking in silence.

❤❤My friend looked up from the watermelon she had been slicing and knew immediately that her worst fear was coming true - - her precious baby girl was choking.

❤❤The frantic look in her daughter's eyes revealed she could not breath. My friend knew she had to react quickly but mentally could not perform the actions on her own. She needed help. She needed her husband. She had momentarily panicked but knew ... time was of the essence.

❤❤She lifted her child and ran swiftly outside, tripping on the way but keeping her body in motion. Blood curtling screams escaped her and my friend's husband knew something horrendous was transpiring.

❤❤He rushed to his wife's side once she exited the back doors and instinctively grabbed his baby girl. My friend screamed “flip her over, flip her over” and her husband responded immediately. He knew his little girl was choking to death. He flipped his baby girl over and pounded on her back. The flip and blow dislodged the watermelon choking the life out of their precious baby girl . Their baby girl cried and that family breathed in together a tremendously sigh of relief. Baby girl was absolutely fine.

❤❤As a precautionary measure they called an ambulance and traveled to the hospital. Dazed and disoriented, they both needed to make double darn sure that their baby was okay and plus it is always recommended to go to the hospital after a choking event. Their baby girl was absolutely fine.

❤❤In hindsight, my friend believed that the watermelon slice may have been too thick hence the creation of JT's Law Video THIN AND ON THE SKIN that Is saved on the Page.

❤❤She also chastises herself for not paying 100% attention to her daughter when she was eating. Being a friend of mine, she is extremely cognizant of the dangers of choking and knows that supervision is key. But, really who would think a few seconds of turning your eyes downward and standing in the same room (only 3 feet away) - - that your child could choke? It happens. Her story proves it.

❤❤She also believes that her and her husband knew how to promptly respond to a food choking event due to ME. They believe our friendship was predestined to keep their little girl safe. I believe that too 😉

❤❤I also believe our friendship was predestined so I can share their story and help keep your children safeR from this danger.

Even if you are to cut the watermelon thin and keep it on the skin and supervise your child, Your child still has a risk of choking, but this page exists to teach you safeR ways to reduce the risk of choking and to teach you how to combat a food, choking event, if it was to occur.

This is exactly why we do what we do, every staff member covered and lives protected in Maverick's honor. Thank you, Queen Anne's County Office of the Sheriff for all that you do and a heartfelt thank you to Laurie for championing this partnership. 💙 Know another agency that should have these? Let's partner up, reach out to us! [email protected]

The Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the addition of LifeVac Anti-Choking Devices as part of our ongoing commitment to protecting lives and enhancing emergency preparedness.

Every deputy and civilian staff member now has access to a LifeVac device, providing an additional life-saving tool for choking emergencies when every second counts.

These devices were donated by Maverick’s Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit founded by Kimberly and Darrin Chambers after the tragic loss of their four-month-old son, Maverick, to a choking incident. In his memory, they work to help prevent similar tragedies by providing life-saving resources to agencies and communities nationwide.

This partnership was made possible through the efforts of Ms. Laurie Kimbles, whose dedication helped secure 98 FDA-registered LifeVac devices at no cost to our agency. The devices will be carried in Sheriff’s Office vehicles and placed throughout our facilities.

We are grateful to Maverick’s Legacy Foundation for their generosity and commitment to saving lives, and to Laurie for helping bring this valuable resource to our agency and the community we serve.

I'm resharing this post from 2024 because it amazes me just how similar our stories are, and how different our outcomes were because of a simple device that is literally the difference between life and death.

Maverick and Riley were both infants (Maverick almost 5 months and Riley 6 months) both had a quick inhale after coughing that caused a total blockage on something that you would not think possible to choke on (Mav on a pea and Riley on pureed green beans) and in both instances back blows did not work to clear their blockage. The only real difference between our stories is that Riley's mom, Kaitlyn, had heard Maverick's story and listened to our suggestion to equip her family with a LifeVac.

I would give anything I own to have our son back, but to know his memory is making a true difference brings us some peace in his absence. 💙👣

Little Riley was our 4th life saved, and now we're at 11 lives saved and counting!
