Food System News: Where does your meat come from?!

The U.S. recently lifted tariffs on imported beef in the attempt to lower prices. But with national country-of-origin labeling not mandatory, you might not know where that ground beef on the shelf was raised.

American cattle ranchers are speaking out, warning that flooding the market with cheap imports hurts domestic producers without actually lowering prices for consumers. If it does help wallets now, it’s not doing anything to address the bigger issues with meat production in the US.

The U.S. cattle herd sits at its lowest level in over 70 years due to extreme weather and skyrocketing costs. Between complex supply chains, factory farming (CAFOs), and rising prices, the true cost of our food system is getting harder to ignore.

What do you think? Does knowing where your food comes from change how you shop? Drop your thoughts in the comments.

Next up: We’re diving into what it actually takes to invest in local and regional meat production; the costs, benefits, barriers and goals. Stay tuned!

Tomatillos, like tomatoes, peppers and potatoes, are part of the solanaceae or nightshade family. That means their leaves and stems are poisonous to eat but their fruits are safe and edible!

Tomatillos are a great way to diversify your garden, bring in more beneficial insects, and have one more fun ingredient to play with in the kitchen.

Even if you’ve never grown a tomatillo or seen one growing, you’ve probably encountered it as the star ingredient of salsa verde. Fresh, yummy, nutritious, and great for canning to save for winter.

Keep this in mind as we wind down this year’s gardening season and start dreaming about next year.

Food system news: free and reduced lunch supports families AND our school system!

It’s hard to believe it’s already time to go back to school. For families who are struggling to fill lunch boxes this year, there is help.

The free and reduced price program does just as it says; offers assistance to qualifying families for school meals.

Of course the benefits kids at school, but what you might not know is it also supports our entire school community.

Applying matters for Kearsarge Regional School District families this year because it boosts student success and brings funding to our region.

Applications are 100% confidential. Find the form directly on the district homepage under the Family & Community tab and submit yours today.

Please help spread the word about this program that supports Kearsarge-area children and families.

Let’s remove the stigma around receiving support so that every qualifying family gets the assistance they need!
