**Adult education changes lives in ways that go far beyond the classroom. And Rhode Island is showing us how!** 💙

🇺🇸 **Day 2 of COABE's Invest in the U.S. Tour** brought CEO Sharon Bonney to Rhode Island, where we witnessed the incredible work happening when education, workforce development, and community partnerships come together.

📍 At Genesis Center , we saw how programs like Keys for Cars, free tax preparation services (VITA), and the Culinary Hub of Providence (CHOP) help remove barriers and create pathways to opportunity for adult learner (CCAP) , we learned how GED preparation, youth workforce services, and individualized support are helping young adults take their next steps toward success.

🏆 One of the day's highlights was **Rhode Island's Celebration of Adult Education**, where we recognized the Teacher of the Year and outstanding nominees. Congratulations to these incredible educators! Thank you to **Senator Jack Reed's office** for helping honor their contributions.

🤝 We also connected with United Way and The Economic Progress Institute
to discuss how strong partnerships can expand opportunities for adult learners and strengthen communities.

A special thank you to **Sophie Tan, Rhode Island's State Director for Adult Education, and the Rhode Island Department of Education - RIDE for bringing everyone together. And thank you to the dedicated educators, program leaders, and community partners who welcomed Sharon and shared their stories!

🌟 First stop: Massachusetts!

The 2026 Invest in the U.S. Tour is underway, and what a great way to begin.

Massachusetts adult education programs are making a real difference across the state:

🎓 27,194 adult learners served
📈 14,020 learners making measurable skill gains
🏆 1,383 high school equivalency completions

Those numbers are important, but the people behind them are what make the story powerful — learners building new skills, working toward credentials, advancing in their careers, supporting their families, and creating new opportunities for the future.

Our CEO, Sharon Bonney was grateful to spend time with the educators, program leaders, researchers, and partners who make that work possible every day.

A special thank-you to Wyvonne Stewart, Massachusetts State Director, for the warm welcome and for her commitment to elevating student voice and creating meaningful opportunities for learners to lead. Wyvonne's innovative student leadership work will be on full display at COABE’s State Directors and State Association Leadership Meeting at in New Orleans!

I’m also grateful to Alexandra Papagno of Massachusetts SABES for her partnership in making statewide COABE membership possible, and toNorthern Essex Community College , for his continued commitment to adult education.

It was also wonderful to connect with Connie Rivera, Toby Maguire, Heidi Schuler, and Dr. Stephen Sireci.
