We found hundreds of thousands of firefighters nationwide are still wearing gear that contains PFAS. Many want to get rid of it, but replacing it could cost billions — and leave taxpayers on the hook. https://www.investigatetv.com/2026/11/02/billion-dollar-problem-firehouses-potentially-toxic-gear-tight-budgets-fight-over-who-pays-replace-it/

We're proud to announce that Melissa Colón has been selected as Manatee County's next Emergency Communications Chief!

With 14 years in emergency communications with Manatee County, Melissa has worked her way up through the ranks, beginning as a Telecommunicator and taking on progressively greater responsibilities, most recently serving as Training Manager.

Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to developing employees, strengthening training programs, and supporting the professionals who serve our community every day.

Melissa is stepping into the role following Chief Mark Jones' retirement this year, concluding 37 years of dedicated service to Manatee County.

We're excited to see Melissa take on this new role and lead the ECC into its next chapter.

Congratulations, Melissa! 👏
