Nails, Corns, & Calluses... Oh My! 🦶

Corns, calluses, cracks, and thickened nails are often treated as routine. In patients with diabetes or PAD, they are early warning signs on the path to ulceration and limb loss.

What a week in Las Vegas! 💙

SAWC Fall 2026 brought together some of the most passionate people in wound care, and we’re so grateful we got to be part of it. Thank you to everyone who stopped by Booth 809 to talk PAD awareness, pick up a pair of white socks, and join the movement. 🧦

A huge thank you to our booth volunteers, Board Members Casey and Shannon, for welcoming every visitor with so much energy and heart. Our presence at SAWC wouldn’t have been possible without you!

A special shoutout to Board Members Dr. Alton Johnson and Dr. Desmond Bell, who joined Dr. Windy Cole on stage for “Saving Lives and Limbs: Prevention and Care of the Diabetic Foot Ulcer.” Conversations like this are how we move from awareness to action.

Every connection made this week brings us closer to a future where fewer people lose a limb to preventable disease. Let’s keep the momentum going.

Up to half of patients never get a test of the blood flow in their leg before an amputation. Time Out Before Amputation (TOBA®) asks care teams to stop and check first.

If you or someone you love is living with diabetes or PAD, this short video is for you, and for the clinicians who care for you. You have the right to ask for a vascular test before an amputation.

Did you know you could ask for this test? Tell us in the comments.

Honoring a veteran. Investing in wound care. 🫡 🩵

The Save A Leg, Save A Life Foundation is proud to partner with the ABWM Foundation on the Harold L. Johnson Memorial Scholarship, supporting health care providers who are working toward wound care certification through the American Board of Wound Management.

Harold L. Johnson was a Vietnam veteran who served SALSAL for many years, working with fellow amputees and speaking on local radio about his own journey with diabetes and PAD. This scholarship carries his commitment to others forward.

The scholarship covers the initial certification exam fee for the CWCA®, CWS®, or CWSP® credential. Up to 10 exam scholarships are awarded each year to first-time candidates, with selection based on financial need, commitment to wound care, character, and a history of volunteer service. Preference is given to those who have served honorably in the Armed Forces or Reserves.

The next application deadline is October 25, 2026.

Last day of September, and we're closing out the White Sock Campaign with some extra paws in the game. 🧦🐾

SALSAL Board Member Dr. David B. Alper, DPM, FFPM RCPS (Glasg) and his loyal sidekick Gizmo are pulling on their white socks to show support for PAD awareness and amputation prevention.

Peripheral Artery Disease often shows no obvious symptoms, and many people living with it don't know they have it. Early detection can be the difference between saving a limb and losing one.

September may be ending, but our mission isn't. Talk to your doctor about your leg health, know the warning signs, and share this with someone you love.

Thank you to everyone who wore white socks with us this month. You helped start conversations that can save legs and lives.
