The Emanuel Jackson Sr. Project is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization with a focus on building and empowering our future leaders.Our mission is rooted in the mental & social development of our youth. We have targeted high character students that have already displayed a desire to grow exponentially as leaders of tomorrow. We base our acceptance of students into our program on their academic & beh

avioral history at school. It is our desire to seek those students who are progressing or making a significant effort to evolve as young leaders of tomorrow. The stronger we are together, the greater the impact we will have on those we hope to motivate. It is my aim to surround our youth with as many positive and forward thinking adults as possible. These men and woman of distinction will be guiding mentors to help shape & impact the lives of tomorrow’s leaders.

Juneteenth reminds us that understanding history matters.

It reminds us why voice matters.
Why civic engagement matters.
Why leadership matters.

This summer, 20 EJS Project students will travel through Atlanta and Memphis as part of the Young Legislators Program capstone experience, stepping into spaces deeply connected to American history, civil rights, leadership, and community change.

Students will attend the Youth Circle Summit in Atlanta, visit the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, meet with Memphis Mayor Paul Young, and engage with leaders and organizations shaping communities today.

For many of our students, these experiences represent more than a trip.

They are opportunities to connect history to the present.
To see leadership in action.
To ask questions.
To build confidence.
And to imagine new possibilities for their future.

Because when young people can see themselves in these spaces, they begin to understand that they belong there too.

As we recognize Juneteenth, we're reminded that investing in the next generation of leaders is one of the most powerful ways we can honor the progress made and continue the work ahead.

During a previous Young Legislators Program capstone experience, students had the opportunity to hear from Bryan Stevenson, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative and author of Just Mercy.

One message he shared was simple but powerful:

"Each of us is more than the worst thing we've ever done."

Moments like these are what make the Young Legislators Program so impactful.

Students aren't just reading about leaders in books or hearing about them online. They're engaging directly with people whose work is influencing communities across the country.

Exposure matters.

Because when young people are given a seat at the table, they gain more than knowledge, they gain perspective, confidence, and a broader vision for what is possible.

This is what The Next Seat at the Table is all about.

"It makes me want to be a lawyer."

Sometimes all it takes is one conversation, one experience, or one opportunity to help a young person see a future they hadn't considered before.

Through the Young Legislators Program, students engage with elected officials, community leaders, attorneys, and changemakers who help bring civic engagement and leadership to life.

For this student, meeting lawyers and learning about their work sparked a new interest in pursuing law. It also deepened her understanding of the people and systems that shape our communities.

That's why exposure matters.

When young people are given opportunities to step into new spaces, ask questions, and connect with leaders, they begin to see new possibilities for themselves.

We have some pretty momentous news to share:

Our Founder and Executive Director, Dupree, is the 2026 recipient of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Award.

Presented by the National Education Association as part of the Human and Civil Rights Awards, the Dr. King Memorial Award recognizes Dupree for emulating Dr. King in leadership and philosophy.

The NEA had high praise for our organization:

"[The] EJS Project is recognized as one of the most vital youth engagement programs in the state [of Florida]. By creating forums for young people to have honest conversations around issues that affect their personal growth, exposing them to the importance of history and current events, and socio-political work in their communities, EJS continues Dr. King’s mission to uplift a people."

We are so proud of Dupree. Thank you to the NEA for this incredible honor.
