Happy Halloween from the North County JAG program! We put a festive spin on a communication and active listening activity to get into the spirit of the season. 🎃

Students partnered off with one student receiving a paper with a blank pumpkin and one student selecting a Jack-o-Lantern face at random. Students sat back to back so they couldn’t see either the face or the blank pumpkin. Students with the Jack-o-Lantern face had to describe the face in enough detail for their partner to replicate the face on their pumpkin. Once completed, they compared their finished face to the original and swapped roles.

Students quickly learned that it was just as important to be an active listener as it was to give clear directions.

On October 21st, Donyel Burns with Keller Williams Realty came by to discuss what it’s like being a realtor. She spoke about the process to become a realtor in the state of Missouri, the behind the scenes activities that go into buying or selling a home, and the ins and outs of the buying and selling process.

Donyel is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about being a realtor and that showed through her presentations. The North County JAG students loved her energy, her infectious smile, and of course, the snacks that she treated the students to. 😉 We appreciate Donyel making her first ever guest speaking engagement with the North County JAG program and look forward to welcoming her back one day! 💙💛

Scott Griffin, owner of Griffin Automotive Design in Bonne Terre, stopped by last week to spend the day talking with our North County JAG classes.

Scott spoke on a wide variety of topics related to his profession, attributes that he personally looks for/values in an employee, and suggestions on how to present yourself when seeking employment anywhere, not just with him.

Scott also spoke about setting goals and reevaluating those goals as the time approaches. North County JAG students took this idea and set our own individual goals for the rest of the school year, the next two years, and a big five year plan.

A huge thank you to Scott Griffin for sharing his knowledge and inspiring our North County JAG students to dream big while planning for their future.

On October 14th, North County JAG officers attended the South Central Region Leadership Day held at the DeSoto National Guard Armory. The officers spent the day working with each other and officers from JAG programs from around our region.

The National Guard facilitated team building exercises, activities to encourage communication and leadership, and provided a fun filled day of networking for these JAG leaders.

On October 13th, North County JAG headed to Cape Girardeau to attend Build My Future. Students spent the day exploring a wide variety of trades related fields and activities set up by businesses, schools, unions, and other exhibitors to showcase what trades fields have to offer.

North County JAG students had the chance to participate in hands-on activities such as testing their skills at laying bricks or settling concrete, speak with professionals representing different trades and companies, and explore what opportunities for the future there are in trades fields.

Students gained first hand knowledge from speaking with exhibitors, were able to ask questions about how to go about entering particular fields, and made memories with their friends that will last a lifetime.

This is an event students look forward to each year and there were so many great experiences had by these students. We’re so thankful for opportunities like this from professionals and businesses that want to invest in our student’s futures.

One of the biggest highlights of the day for our program was visiting with one of our very own North County JAG alumni Josiebelle Jones as she represented her employer Robertson Contractors at their booth. It’s always great to see when an alumni is not only successful but also happy in their chosen career path.

On October 8th, North County alumni Terrece Pearman stopped by to chat with our North County JAG program. Terrece, who currently lives in Utah, was coming into town for her class reunion during Homecoming and sought out the chance to speak with our North County JAG program after learning of the program.

After graduating from NCHS, Terrece earned her undergraduate degree from Mizzou in Biochemistry followed by a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Physiology from St. Louis University. Terrece spent many years as a research scientist in pharmaceutical and biotech companies. During this time as a research scientist, Terrece saw the need for patent lawyers who were able to understand the medical terminology in the patents being applied for by these pharmaceutical and biotech companies. This led Terrece to law school at the University of Utah and into the practice of patent law.

With such a successful and out of the ordinary career path, Terrece was a wealth of knowledge for our North County JAG students. She spoke about her paths through education, decision making when it came to changing career paths, what it was like to be both a research scientist and a patent lawyer, and the importance of choosing a path that makes you happy and fulfilled.

It’s time to play a little catch up to showcase some of the things North County JAG has been up to lately.

First up… team building with our class mates. Being a team player, learning to communicate with others, problem solving, and numerous other soft skills are just more fun to learn when you’re having fun practicing them. Whether it was a team building day outside to enjoy one of the first cool days of fall or a game of Career Pictionary to wrap up our Career Research Presentations, our North County JAG students have been hard at work while having fun along the way.

We even helped spread the fun to others at NCHS by hosting a ‘Where’s Rorik the Raider ?’ activity during Homecoming that had students trying to identify where on campus our mascot had popped up for a picture.

Brodey is a testament to hard work, resiliency, and dedication to goals. He is the president of North County JAG, a strong second-year student in Unitec Career Center’s Welding Program, and will represent NC in the JAG-Missouri Essay Contest for the second year in a row. Brodey makes the right decisions, is a leader of character, focused on his future, and is committed to bettering the world around him. Brodey is exactly what it means to be a RAIDER, and we are so proud to award him with October Student of the Month!💙💛

North County JAG had the opportunity to hear about how elections work, how to get registered to vote, and learn more about the election process in St. Francois County when St. Francois County Clerk Kevin Engler stopped by this morning.

Mr. Engler also spoke about his time spent as a financial advisor, Missouri State Representative, and Missouri State Senator. Thank you for taking the time to stop by to teach our JAG students about the voting process!

We are excited to announce our new JAG Specialist, Ms. Elizabeth Grohs! Ms. Grohs was formerly a science teacher at NCHS from 2009-2019 before taking time off to focus on her family and her children. She is excited to return to the classroom in this role and continue the excellence of our JAG program! As a science teacher, Ms. Grohs focused on developing relationships, incorporating life skills into her lessons, and making everyday learning applicable to real life. We are certain her background, personality, and skill set will serve our JAG students well! Please welcome Ms. Grohs to North County JAG💙💛
