Angel Flight East FREE FLIGHTS TO MEDICAL CARE FAR FROM HOME Harry Morales, a general aviation pilot, wanted to help with relief efforts after Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

"The mission of Angel Flight East is to provide free air transportation to qualified patients and their families by arranging flights to distant medical facilities, delivering supplies to disaster areas, and reuniting families during desperate times." Angel Flight East (AFE) is Pennsylvania’s first and largest provider of free air transportation for medically needy patients. He founded Angel Fligh

t East, with the help of Jeff Kahn and Joe Staples, among others. Their vision and commitment to the principles of public benefit flying drove the dynamic force of what was to become AFE. Immediately, the organization began to fill the gap between the need to access crucial medical care at a distance and the high cost of transportation to get there. In 1993, the first year of operations, AFE’s small band of new volunteer pilots flew 17 missions. Today, 300 to 400 medical missions are flown each year in a 28-state area. Volunteer pilots are AFE’s greatest asset, and are the heart and core of Angel Flight East! All flights that are coordinated by AFE are provided FREE to patients, in part because our volunteer pilots donate their time and expertise, aircraft, fuel, and airport fees for each and every mission! Our pilots have a passion for helping others! Angel Flight East facilitates transportation in the Eastern region of the United States, and for destinations beyond our reach, we link with other volunteer pilot organizations. Anyone who requests a flight must be medically stable, able to board an aircraft, and fly in a small single or twin engine aircraft. Our volunteer pilots use their private planes to fly our patients to their destinations. These men and women pay for all expenses for each flight request.

For Anastasia and her mom, getting the specialized medical care she needs means traveling from Ohio to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), because sometimes the care you need simply isn’t available closer to home.

Anastasia is being evaluated for a specialized study to determine whether her surgery has successfully treated her hyperinsulinism, or whether she may need additional surgery. For her mom, a single parent and full-time college student, the cost of traveling back and forth for medical care can be an overwhelming challenge.

That’s where Angel Flight East volunteer pilot Jose stepped in. Jose recently made sure Anastasia and her mom could get home safely after their important visit to CHOP.

We’re grateful for pilots like Jose who give their time, skills, and aircraft to help families reach the medical care they need, free of charge.

Because when specialized care is hundreds of miles away, an AFE pilot can help make the journey home a little easier.

Five-year-old Mac had plenty to celebrate after his recent visit to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh!

Mac traveled with his mom and big brother from their home in Tennessee to Pittsburgh for follow-up care after the kidney transplant he received from his dad. And making the trip even more special? Mac had a familiar friend in the cockpit—AFE pilot John, who flew the family round trip to Mac’s appointment.

The best news came from the doctor: things are looking good! So, naturally, the celebration called for a very important treat—a giant rainbow-swirl lollipop. And judging by Mac’s face, he enjoyed every sticky, colorful bite!

A huge THANK YOU to Pilot John for giving his time, his skills and his heart to help Mac and his family get where they needed to go. Pilots like John make these journeys possible—and turn long trips to medical care into moments filled with friendship, hope and smiles.

For Linda of St. Mary's, PA, every trip to a medical appointment is a challenge.

Linda lives on a fixed income and has a medical condition that causes severe back and rib pain that makes riding in a car excruciating. She can't lie down because of the pain and relies on a walker to navigate long walks into medical appointments.

Thanks to Angel Flight East's dedicated network of volunteer pilots, Linda was able to travel comfortably to the Cleveland Clinic to receive the specialized care she needed for no cost.

No one should have to choose between getting the care they need and the journey it takes to get there.

For 4-year-old Vihaan, a liver transplant meant a new chance at life—and his dad was the donor who made it possible.

After follow-up treatment at NY Presbyterian, Vihaan and his parents needed a way to get home safely for the next step in his journey.

That’s where Angel Flight East pilot John stepped in. John volunteered his time, aircraft and skills to fly Vihaan and his parents home.

We’re proud to have pilots like John who give their time to help families navigate some of life’s most difficult journeys. Every flight is more than a trip; it’s a flight toward healing, hope and home.
