Angel Flight East

Angel Flight East FREE FLIGHTS TO MEDICAL CARE FAR FROM HOME Harry Morales, a general aviation pilot, wanted to help with relief efforts after Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

"The mission of Angel Flight East is to provide free air transportation to qualified patients and their families by arranging flights to distant medical facilities, delivering supplies to disaster areas, and reuniting families during desperate times." Angel Flight East (AFE) is Pennsylvania’s first and largest provider of free air transportation for medically needy patients. He founded Angel Fligh

t East, with the help of Jeff Kahn and Joe Staples, among others. Their vision and commitment to the principles of public benefit flying drove the dynamic force of what was to become AFE. Immediately, the organization began to fill the gap between the need to access crucial medical care at a distance and the high cost of transportation to get there. In 1993, the first year of operations, AFE’s small band of new volunteer pilots flew 17 missions. Today, 300 to 400 medical missions are flown each year in a 28-state area. Volunteer pilots are AFE’s greatest asset, and are the heart and core of Angel Flight East! All flights that are coordinated by AFE are provided FREE to patients, in part because our volunteer pilots donate their time and expertise, aircraft, fuel, and airport fees for each and every mission! Our pilots have a passion for helping others! Angel Flight East facilitates transportation in the Eastern region of the United States, and for destinations beyond our reach, we link with other volunteer pilot organizations. Anyone who requests a flight must be medically stable, able to board an aircraft, and fly in a small single or twin engine aircraft. Our volunteer pilots use their private planes to fly our patients to their destinations. These men and women pay for all expenses for each flight request.

Angel Flight East was proud to be part of the 5th Annual Aviation Day at Penn Valley Airport in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, where aviation enthusiasts, pilots, and families gathered to celebrate the joy of flight and all that general aviation brings to our communities. The event featured aircraft displays, aviation exhibits, and opportunities for visitors to learn more about the world of aviation.

AFE staff spent the day connecting with attendees and sharing how our volunteer pilots donate their time, aircraft, and resources to provide free flights to medical care for children and adults in need.

A special thank you to AFE volunteer pilot Earl, who helped organize this outstanding community event and is pictured proudly standing in front of his aircraft. Pilots like Earl help spread the spirit of aviation while making a meaningful difference in the lives of our passengers.

If you're a pilot looking to fly with purpose, we'd love to hear from you. Learn how you can turn your passion for aviation into hope and healing for those who need it most at Angel Flight East. See link in Comments.

Recently, AFE volunteer pilot Frank stepped up to help passenger Christie travel from her home near Pottstown, PA, to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Maryland, where she receives critical treatment. By Christie’s side for every step of the journey was her husband, David, her faithful companion and biggest supporter.

Thanks to Frank’s generosity and compassion, Christie and David were spared the long drive and the added financial burden that often comes with ongoing medical care. Even more importantly, it meant less time away from their teenage daughters and more precious moments together as a family.

To Frank, and to all of our volunteer pilots who give patients hope in the skies, "thank you." Your kindness changes lives in ways that go far beyond transportation.

This Saturday, a very special little boy is celebrating his 4th birthday, and we hope you’ll help us send Vihaan lots of birthday wishes!

Vihaan has already shown incredible strength in his young life. After receiving a life-saving liver transplant. He now travels from Michigan to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital for ongoing chemotherapy treatments. By his side every step of the way are his loving mom and dad, who became Vihaan’s liver donor to help save his son’s life.

Recently, AFE volunteer pilot John made sure Vihaan and his family arrived safely for his medical appointment, easing the burden of long-distance travel during an already difficult journey.

We are deeply grateful for volunteer pilots like John who fly with purpose, compassion, and heart. Because of them, families like Vihaan’s can focus less on the stress of travel and more on what matters most; time together and healing.

Join us in wishing Vihaan a very happy 4th birthday and continued strength on his journey!

250 Flights of Hope. 250 Lives Changed. Countless Spirits Lifted.

Today, we proudly celebrate volunteer pilot John on completing his 250th mission with Angel Flight East (AFE)!

Since joining AFE in 2015, John has generously dedicated his time, aircraft, and personal resources to ensure patients can access the medical care they need without the burden of travel costs. Time and again, he is among the first to raise his hand when a passenger needs help, always ready and willing to fly.

But John’s impact goes far beyond transportation. His warm smile, upbeat personality, and compassionate spirit have comforted and encouraged passengers of all ages during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Whether flying a child to specialized treatment or helping an adult get to critical care, John has a remarkable way of lifting spirits and making every passenger feel safe, valued, and cared for.

John, thank you for your incredible generosity, unwavering commitment, and the hundreds of lives you’ve touched through public benefit flying. Your kindness and dedication embody the very heart of Angel Flight East.

Congratulations on this extraordinary milestone, and thank you for being such an inspiring part of the AFE family!

Ten-year-old Dominic is heading home after an important visit to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he’s able to receive specialized care his family can’t access close to home.

Before takeoff, mom Rae gives Dominic a special squeeze, and Angel Flight East volunteer pilot Kley makes sure “Domi” is safely onboard and ready for the journey home, complete with some amazing views along the way!

Moments like these are why Angel Flight East exists: connecting families with the medical care they need, one flight at a time.

Thank you, Kley, for donating your time, aircraft, and heart to help families like Dominic’s.

The best news Anastasia and her mom could hear came! She’s all clear and heading home.

One-year-old Anastasia's journey has involved months of treatment, including surgery. She recently traveled from her home in Ohio to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for critical follow-up care to determine whether her surgery was successful or if more treatment would be needed. That visit brought the outcome every family hopes for.

Now, thanks to Angel Flight East volunteer pilot Jose, Anastasia and her mom are on their way home with a smooth, stress-free flight provided completely free of charge. For Anastasia’s mom, a single parent and full-time college student, the cost of commercial air travel could have created an overwhelming burden. Instead, Angel Flight East helped ease that stress, allowing this family to focus on what matters most: Anastasia’s health and healing.

Moments like these are why Angel Flight East exists. Through the generosity of volunteer pilots and supporters, we provide free flights to medical care for families facing some of life’s toughest challenges.

Today, we’re celebrating Anastasia’s incredible milestone and wishing her well as she begins this joyful new chapter.
