After 13 months of uncertainty, Michael finally had a way forward.

When Michael came to Lakeshore Legal Aid’s FLAP clinic, he was struggling to navigate his divorce on his own. A volunteer attorney helped him get started, and Lakeshore secured continued pro bono representation.

With that support, Michael obtained a consent judgment of divorce, including a fair division of property and debt.

More than a legal outcome, he gained closure, stability and the ability to move forward.

This is the impact of OCBF grant funding. This is the power of pro bono service.

Last night, the OCBF was honored to be awarded the 2026 Community Hero Award by the Oakland Mediation Center.

This award celebrates our partnership with them and the recent success they have been able to achieve with their low cost legal services line. Both organizations have very similar missions and the OCBF is happy to help them make an impact in the community with our funding.

Immediate Past President, Andrew Harris and Vice President, Jeff Bagalis attended to accept the award on the behalf of the foundation.

Access to justice changes lives.

Thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Oakland County Bar Foundation, Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan's La Casa Amiga Legal Clinic continued providing affordable immigration legal services to individuals and families throughout Oakland County during a period of significant policy changes and increased community need.

Over the course of the grant period, the clinic conducted 237 client pre-screenings and helped community members access critical immigration benefits, including green card renewals, work authorization renewals, DACA renewals, and travel documents.

When legal guidance is accessible, families can stay together, continue working, and build stable futures.

As we begin a new fiscal year, we extend our sincere gratitude to these dedicated leaders for their outstanding service on the OCBF Board of Trustees as they conclude their terms.

While we are sad to see them leave the Board, we are pleased to share that Marc Jerabek and David Plunkett will continue supporting the Foundation as Emeritus Trustees. We are also deeply grateful for Bryan Fitzgibbon's commitment to the OCBF's mission and the lasting impact of his service.

Every day, OCBF grant dollars help Oakland County residents access the legal support they need during some of life's most difficult moments.

Through Lakeshore Legal Aid's Family Law Assistance Project, 81 low-income individuals received assistance at nine in-person family law clinics between December and April. These clinics provide critical guidance on custody, parenting time, divorce, domestic violence, and other family law matters.

This is what access to justice looks like—compassionate legal support, trusted guidance, and a path forward for those who need it most.
