Ever wonder why we built this fabulous little playground just for our foster puppies? (All thanks to our donors!)
Watching them explode through the dog door, race down the ramp and zoom around the Puppy Paddock, you’d probably think the answer is pretty obvious…
Because it’s FUN! And it absolutely is.
But there’s actually a MUCH more important reason behind it.
We wanted our puppies to be able to experience the world, sunshine, fresh air, grass, begin potty training, different textures, sights, sounds, toys, and LOTS of room to run and play, without unnecessarily exposing them to something that could KILL them.
And believe it or not, that brings us to…

Imagine you’re walking somewhere and step in a big pile of dog p**p.
Gross. 🤢
You scrape it off your shoe, wipe your foot on the grass and keep going.
But what you DON’T know is what might have been in that p**p.
If it came from a dog shedding parvovirus, you could potentially carry contaminated material on that shoe somewhere else. You might walk into a grocery store, a shopping mall, a pet store, a friend’s house or anywhere else without realizing that the same contaminated material is being carried along on the bottom of your shoe.
And unfortunately, we aren’t the only ones who step in p**p.
Dogs and other animals can walk through contaminated areas too, potentially carrying contaminated material on their paws and tracking it somewhere else.
Into the pet store when you take them to pick out their favorite toy, or for a walk around the neighborhood.
That’s one of the scary things about parvo. A vulnerable puppy doesn’t have to walk up and lick a sick dog to be at risk.
And young puppies who haven’t completed their vet recommended vaccine series are particularly vulnerable. The DAPP/DHPP (distemper parvo) series usually begins around 6–8 weeks of age, with boosters every 3–4 weeks until at least 16 weeks old. After the final vaccine, it generally takes about 1–2 weeks for the immune system to build its best protection against parvo.
THAT is why we’re so careful and built this amazing indoor puppery and outdoor puppy paddock.
It’s why our puppies don’t make trips to pet stores, dog parks or other high-dog-traffic public places while they’re still vulnerable.
It’s why visitors entering our puppy areas wear shoe covers or our designated shoes.
And it’s why we invested so much in creating an environment where our puppies could have an incredibly enriched puppyhood WITHOUT taking unnecessary risks.
Our Puppery has commercial heat-welded flooring, the same kind used in hospitals and vet offices, that extends up the walls, eliminating traditional baseboard cracks where urine, f***s and bacteria can seep. The lower walls are covered in nonporous fiberglass-reinforced panels that can be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
And this fabulous Puppy Paddock they’re racing into is covered with K9Grass by ForeverLawn, which we specifically chose because it can be cleaned and disinfected. (Same product that top end doggy day care centers use.)
So while these little guys are learning to use a dog door, navigate a ramp, potty outside, run on different surfaces, play, explore, socialize and generally have the time of their lives…
We are worrying about the things they can’t see.
Keeping puppies safe doesn’t mean keeping them in a bubble.
It means finding ways to let them experience their great big world as SAFELY as possible.
So go ahead, babies…
