Sam's Place

Sam's Place Sam's Place is a nonprofit organization located in Bigfork, MN. What is Sam’s Place? Each individual has their own room, with shared bathrooms and living spaces.

We are committed to promoting independent living by providing safe housing with services for individuals needing support with daily living activities in a caring community setting. Sam’s Place is an independent living facility in Bigfork, MN with special services available. Our services include medication administration, three meals a day, and help with arranging transportation and medical appoint

ments. We are not a nursing home and do not have 24 hour staff on-site at all times. The building has a long history dating back to 1938 as a hospital, retirement facility and now independent living for those that may need assistance with self advocacy. Focusing on quality of life and centered around the intrinsic human value of all, while encouraging community partnership, the core focus of our community is to serve individuals living with disabling conditions,as well as senior living. Unfortunately, we do not currently have handicap access, but this is definitely a future goal. We provide a safe living environment, meals, and comfortable living in the quiet of the “Great North Woods”, away from the busy hustle of city life. Sam’s Place is centrally located in the quaint town of Bigfork in Itasca County, Minnesota. We overlook the confluence of two beautiful rivers that allow fishing, paths for walking, canoeing and so much more. We are only a few minutes walk to an extremely well stocked grocery store, hardware store and convenience store, as well as many other nearby services. We are only two blocks from the area hospital, clinic, dentist, as well as other emergency services. The faith community has a strong and passionate desire to help everyone in this warm and welcoming community. Our building holds the charm of the old logging towns that have always “taken care of our neighbors”. The building and grounds at Sam’s Place has a zero tolerance policy for illicit drugs and alcohol, as we seek to meet the needs of a variety of clients. Why Sam's Place? Our son Sam passed away in 2022 at the age of 22. His brother lives with us and has Autism. Sam was the embodiment of love and concern for the special needs community, and he used every opportunity to meet and talk to those with special needs. Sam always had time for those who were outside the world's idea of normal. Although Sam had his own struggles, he used them as a beautiful launching pad to help those around him. Eventually, Sam's challenges led him from a promising future as a theoretical math major to an accidental drug overdose. ”Sam's Place” is dedicated to those who struggle with life, as well as those whose heart is as big as the Montana sky for those with special needs. Sam was and continues to be an inspiration and a lesson, a brilliant mind, a big heart, and a short life, stirring us to help those who need help today

Been a tough week at Sam’s place as we say goodbye to our “new” van. #2 spark plug shot out and I don’t have time to replace the head. Book says it’s a 20+ hour job. We don’t have the money to replace it so Jess and I are now driving to Bemidji, Grand Rapids and all points in between for dr visits and dentist appointments and shopping trips with our little 4seater car. Everyone needs to take turns going to town. Of coarse it happened on the morning that we were scheduled to see the new Spider-Man matinee… just replaced the fuel pump, that took the van out of commission for two weeks between bad parts out of the box and shipping times. Anyone want to make a trade?

We had a great time golfing at the First Annual Battle of the Businesses at Park Rec today! Although our golfing left a little to be desired, I did get a hole in one and was pretty psyched about that! Thanks for a fun time, Park Rec!

Four years ago today, I got the call that would forever change my life. My son, my Sammy, my treasure, my pride, my joy, had experienced an overdose and had not survived. “He didn’t make it.” I can still hear the words in my ear like it was yesterday, and I can still feel my heart as it tore in two pieces and I struggled to find the next gulp of air to keep breathing.

Sam had just graduated from college a few months before and had moved to Mankato to start his Master’s degree program. I had last seen him two weeks before when we traveled down to St Paul for Al’s Special Olympics tennis tournament, and Sam came up to cheer him on, always his biggest fan. I gave him a hug when we said goodbye and a basket of paper products and cleaning supplies and other goodies for his new apartment. “I love you, mom,” he said as he walked away.

Less than three weeks later, Charlie and my brother-in-law Dan would be cleaning out Sam’s apartment and that basket of cleaning supplies would be sitting there untouched. New shirts would be found hanging in the closet unworn. Stuff that I would’ve never been able to bear to see would be boxed up or thrown away because Sam was gone. He was 22 years old and he was gone.

Drugs kill. They stole the life of my Sam who was smart and kind and funny and compassionate. He was so much more than the drugs that someone gave him that forever changed him and he could never quite leave behind, no matter how hard he tried, until he didn’t have any chances left. He was a son, a grandson, a brother, a cousin, a friend. He was loved and he is missed.

The pain that I felt when I got the call four years ago will never go away. I know that, and I understand now the pain is the love. When Sam died all of the love that I had in my heart for him shattered into a million tiny pieces that are permanently embedded in my heart like shards of glass. They are always there and I always feel them, although the scar tissue has formed and hardened around them.

That is how it feels to lose a child. I just wanted to put it into words.

Four years. I love you, Sam. I miss you.
