Saint Kosmas the Aitolos
The Apostle, Teacher, Wonderworker and Prophet of the Greek People

This Sunday, we honor one of the most remarkable saints in the history of the Orthodox Church: Saint Kosmas the Aitolos, the New Hieromartyr and Equal-to-the-Apostles.
Saint Kosmas was born in Aetolia around 1714, during one of the darkest periods in the history of the Greek people. Greece had been under Ottoman rule for generations, and many Orthodox Christians lived in poverty, ignorance, and fear. Kosmas became a monk on Mount Athos, where he devoted himself to prayer, study, and preparation for a life of service to God. But eventually he understood that God was calling him to leave the quiet of the monastery and go out among the people.
And what a mission it became.

For nearly twenty years, Saint Kosmas walked from village to village throughout Greece, Macedonia, Epirus, the islands, and Albania, preaching the Gospel and strengthening the Orthodox people. Sometimes hundreds or even thousands gathered to hear him. He would have the people erect a large wooden cross and would stand upon a small stool beside it to preach. When he departed, the cross remained behind—a permanent reminder of Christ and of the words they had heard. Saint Kosmas understood that the people needed more than encouragement. They needed knowledge, education, and a strong foundation in the Faith.

He therefore urged every village to establish schools. He wanted children to learn to read and write, but he also wanted them to know Christ and the teachings of the Orthodox Church. Tradition credits him with inspiring the establishment of hundreds of schools throughout the Greek lands. He would tell parents that education was essential because without educated children, the Faith and the traditions of the people could eventually be lost. Saint Kosmas understood something that remains just as important today: if we want the Faith to survive, we must give it to the next generation.

The people who encountered Saint Kosmas also believed that God had given him extraordinary spiritual gifts. Numerous miracles and healings are associated with his ministry and with his intercession after his death. Among the traditions surrounding him are accounts of people being healed of serious physical ailments after seeking his prayers. One story tells of a poor tailor whose right hand had been withered and useless for years and who received healing through his faith and prayers to Saint Kosmas. Another remarkable tradition tells of a woman who preserved the water with which Saint Kosmas had washed his face. A plant later grew in the water without visible roots and remained fresh for an extraordinarily long period. Such stories helped the people recognize in the humble monk who stood before them a man through whom God's grace was working.

Yet perhaps the most fascinating part of Saint Kosmas' legacy is the collection of prophecies traditionally attributed to him.

Saint Kosmas spoke repeatedly about the future of Greece and the Greek people. At a time when the Greek people were living under Ottoman rule and could scarcely imagine freedom, he told them that their suffering would not last forever. One of his most famous sayings was: “That which is desired will come in the third generation. Your grandchildren will see it.” Saint Kosmas was martyred in 1779, and the Greek War of Independence began in 1821, with the establishment of the independent Greek state following soon afterward. The prophecy has traditionally been understood as referring to the liberation of Greece.

He also spoke about the future of the Ionian Islands. According to the traditional accounts, he said: “The red caps will come, and afterwards the English for fifty-four years, and then this region will become Greek.” The Ionian Islands subsequently experienced French and British rule, and after approximately fifty-four years of British protection, they were united with Greece in 1864. These events became one of the most frequently cited examples of Saint Kosmas' prophecies.

But his prophecies went far beyond the political future of Greece. Saint Kosmas spoke of things that, to an eighteenth-century audience, would have sounded almost impossible. He said that a time would come when people would speak to one another from great distances as though they were in adjoining rooms. He spoke of a carriage without horsestraveling faster than a rabbit. He spoke of the earth being surrounded by a “thread.” He said that people would one day fly through the sky like birds and that they would bring fire down upon the earth. These sayings have traditionally been interpreted as references to telephones and modern communications, automobiles, electrical and communication networks, airplanes, and modern warfare.

Saint Kosmas also gave warnings concerning the future of the region and the Greek people. Among the sayings traditionally attributed to him are references to great wars, suffering, Constantinople—often called simply “the City”—and dramatic changes involving the nations of the region. He warned that there would come a time when the Romans, meaning the Orthodox Christians of the Roman or Byzantine tradition, would fight among themselves. Some of these prophecies have been interpreted by later generations as referring to events that have already occurred, while others are believed by some to concern events still to come. The precise interpretation of these sayings remains a matter of tradition and discussion, and we should be careful not to turn the words of a saint into political predictions or sensational speculation.

What is most striking is that Saint Kosmas never used his prophetic gifts simply to satisfy people's curiosity about tomorrow. His purpose was always to bring people closer to God today. When he spoke about the future, he warned people to remain faithful, to repent, to pray, to love one another, to educate their children, and not to abandon Christ when difficult times came. His prophecies were not meant to make people obsessed with the future. They were meant to give them courage to remain faithful through whatever the future might bring.

Eventually, Saint Kosmas himself became the victim of the persecution he had warned others about. In 1779, he was betrayed and handed over to Ottoman authorities. He was taken to a remote location in Albania and hanged. His body was thrown into a river with a stone attached to it. According to the tradition of the Church, several days later his body was miraculously recovered from the river by a priest and buried near a monastery.
Saint Kosmas had spent nearly twenty years walking across the countryside preaching Christ, establishing schools, encouraging families, healing the sick, strengthening the faithful, and giving hope to people who had lived for generations under oppression. In the end, he gave his own life for the Faith he had preached.

His death did not silence him. His crosses remained standing in the villages. The schools he encouraged continued to educate children. His teachings were passed from generation to generation. His prophecies were remembered. His miracles continued to inspire the faithful. And his name became so deeply loved by the Greek people that he came to be known affectionately as Patrokosmas—Father Kosmas.

The Church honors him as Equal-to-the-Apostles because of the extraordinary missionary work he accomplished among the Orthodox people. But perhaps the most important lesson Saint Kosmas leaves us is beautifully simple: we must preserve the Faith and pass it faithfully to our children.

Saint Kosmas knew that a people can lose almost everything—its wealth, its freedom, its homes, even its country—and still survive if it keeps Christ in its heart and teaches its children the Faith. He left behind wooden crosses as reminders of Christ. He encouraged schools so that children could learn. He preached repentance so that souls could be saved. And he gave his own life so that others might remain faithful.

More than two centuries later, his message remains just as powerful. We cannot know everything that the future holds, nor should we become consumed by trying to interpret every prophecy. But we do know what Saint Kosmas would tell us to do: love one another, educate our children, remain close to the Church, pray, repent, and never abandon Christ.

The future is in God's hands. Our responsibility is to remain faithful to Him.
May Saint Kosmas the Aitolos pray for our children, our families, our teachers, and our Church. May he help us preserve the Faith we have received and pass it faithfully to the next generation.

Saint Kosmas the Aitolos, Equal-to-the-Apostles and Teacher of the Greek People, pray for us!

The Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, celebrated on August 15, is one of the great joys of the Orthodox Church. On this day, we remember the falling asleep of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, and her being taken up into heaven. Unlike an ordinary passing, her Dormition is filled with peace, holiness, and the promise of eternal life, showing us the victory of Christ over death.

According to the ancient tradition of the Church, the Theotokos was informed by the Archangel Gabriel that the time had come for her to depart from this earthly life. She received this message with the same humility and obedience with which she once accepted the Annunciation. Filled with joy and readiness to meet her Son, she went to pray on the Mount of Olives, preparing her soul in peace.

Miraculously, the Apostles were gathered from the corners of the world to be present at her side. Brought on the clouds by the power of God, they came to Jerusalem, where they found the Theotokos waiting, radiant and full of grace. The gathering of the Apostles around her bed became a sign of unity, as once again they were witnesses to the mystery of God’s salvation.

When the moment of her Dormition came, the Lord Himself appeared with the heavenly hosts. Surrounded by light, Christ received the soul of His Mother into His hands, just as she had once held Him as an infant in Bethlehem. Her passing was not marked by sorrow or corruption but by peace and the fragrance of holiness.

The Apostles carried her body in procession and placed it in a tomb in the Garden of Gethsemane. Yet, even this was not the end of the mystery. On the third day, when the Apostle Thomas arrived late and desired to venerate her, they opened the tomb and found it empty. The body of the Theotokos had been taken up into heaven, united with her soul, as a sign of her glory and as the first fruits of the resurrection promised to all believers.
According to the holy tradition, the Theotokos, in her compassion for the Apostle Thomas, did not leave him without a blessing. From heaven, she removed her precious Holy Belt (Zōnē), woven from camel’s hair by her own hands, and entrusted it to him as a tangible proof of her bodily assumption. This relic became a source of countless miracles throughout the centuries, strengthening the faithful and reminding us of her unceasing intercession for the world. To this day, the Holy Zōnē is treasured in the Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos.

The Dormition of the Theotokos, then, is not simply a remembrance of her departure but a proclamation of hope for all mankind. In her, we see the destiny of the faithful: to be taken from death into life through Christ. Her life and her Dormition testify that the way of humility, purity, and obedience to God leads to eternal glory.

For this reason, the Church celebrates this feast with great joy. It is called the “Summer Pascha,” for it is like Easter in the heart of August, reminding us that death is not the end but the gateway to life. Through the prayers of the Theotokos, and by the witness of her Holy Zōnē, we too are strengthened to face our own mortality with the assurance that Christ has prepared a place for us in His Kingdom.

Thus, the Dormition is a story of love fulfilled—a Mother going to her Son, a soul entering into eternal light, and the Church rejoicing that death has no power over those who belong to Christ.

Jesus had gone with his disciples Peter, James, and John to Mount Tabor. Christ's appearance was changed while they watched into a glorious radiant figure. There appeared Elijah and Moses, speaking with Jesus. The disciples were amazed and terribly afraid.

This event shows forth the divinity of Christ, so that the disciples would understand after his Ascension that He was truly the radiant splendor of the Father, and that his Passion was voluntary (Mark 9:2-9). It also shows the possibility of our own theosis.

In Greece and Romania the harvest season traditionally began on the Transfiguration. Grapes, in particular, were not eaten before August 6. In some parishes, the first grapes would be brought to church for a blessing and distributed to parishioners.
