🩺 SCRUBS: WEEK TWO 🩺

Scrubs students had another incredible hands-on experience at Blackhawk Technical College's Nursing Program this week! Students participated in an emergency room mass casualty simulation, where they assessed patients using pulse oximeters, Dopplers, and pupil checks before triaging them based on the severity of their conditions. They also rotated through clinical skills stations, gaining firsthand experience with IV starts, injections, drawing blood from a central line, and suctioning a tracheostomy.

These immersive activities provided students with valuable insight into the fast-paced world of healthcare while helping them develop practical skills and confidence in a clinical setting.

🩺 SCRUBS: WEEK ONE 🩺

Students in the Scrubs Academy kicked off their first week with an eye-opening experience at Blackhawk Technical College!

Students visited the nursing program at , where they learned about the aging process and participated in simulations designed to mimic sensory deficits affecting vision, hearing, touch, and mobility. These hands-on experiences helped students better understand the challenges older adults may face and reinforced the importance of compassionate, patient-centered care.

What a rewarding three days exploring what lies "Beneath our Feet!"

🦕 Day 1: Students stepped into the shoes of paleontologists as they explored careers in the field. They hiked through woodlands searching for fossils, met with a local paleontologist, and learned about the skills and knowledge needed to uncover Earth's ancient history.

💎 Day 2: The exploration continued as students dug into the world of geology and mining careers. Guided by a geologist, they examined minerals such as halite and quartz while investigating properties like luster and hardness. Through a hands-on "mining" activity using chocolate chip cookies, students discovered the challenges of resource extraction before ending the day by cracking open geodes to reveal the beautiful crystals hidden inside.

🌱 Day 3: Students discovered the fascinating science beneath our feet with the help of soil scientists. They investigated soil composition, water runoff, and the critical role soil plays in our environment. Using professional field tools, students collected and analyzed soil samples, studying characteristics such as soil color and texture. They also explored the important work of soil microbes and learned how these tiny organisms help decompose organic matter through a memorable cotton underwear experiment!

A huge thank you to our partners at the and all of the professionals who shared their expertise and inspired students to explore careers in environmental and earth sciences. We loved seeing curiosity, discovery, and hands-on learning come to life!
