In 1993, Long Island Crisis Center started Pride for Youth at a time when support and outreach to LGBTQ+ youth on Long Island was virtually non-existent. Pride for Youth has grown to encompass multiple services addressing many of the needs of LGBTQ+ youth and their families. Pride for Youth created the Coffeehouse program in 1995 – the first suburban coffeehouse for LGBTQ+ youth in the country. We

began airing public service announcements on MTV in the mid 90’s - one of the first mass media outreach strategies for LGBTQ+ youth nationwide. In 2001, Pride for Youth launched an action research project, which documented that 94% of Long Island students are exposed to homophobia in their schools and one in ten have been victimized because of their perceived sexual orientation. With the new millennium’s startling HIV resurgence among young gay and bisexual men of color, Pride for Youth led the way to building a healthier generation of young people through its culturally-sensitive Young Men’s Program, initiated in 2003

Pride for Youth seeded and stewarded Gay-Straight Alliances in several high-need Nassau County school districts from 2004 through the present. In 2006, working with corporate partners such as CMP Media, Pride for Youth launched an employment mentoring program for LGBTQ youth. In 2009, transgender teens found their own place to share their specific concerns and build pride through Pride for Youth’s Trans Support Group. In 2014, PFY implemented Long Island's first and only CBO based PrEP/PEP program, expanding this program to Queens in 2015.

We mourn the loss of Tim Curry. A true legend whose artistry, fearlessness, and unapologetic embrace of the unexpected helped shape q***r history and popular culture.

As Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Curry gave generations of q***r people a character who was outrageous, sensual, theatrical, gender-defying, and unapologetic about taking up space. At a time when representation was scarce, he helped make a difference, something to celebrate rather than hide.

His legacy reaches far beyond one role. Tim Curry reminded us that identity can be fluid, performance can be liberation, and being yourself can be an act of rebellion.

From all of us at PFY: thank you, Tim, for helping so many of us find the courage to be wonderfully, gloriously ourselves.

Today, we remember Dolly Parton as more than a country music icon. We remember her as someone who used her voice to champion love, acceptance, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Her message was simple but powerful: people deserve to be loved and cared for for exactly who they are. At PFY, we honor that spirit of compassion and inclusion and celebrate a legacy that reminds us there is always room for kindness, authenticity, and love.

Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Marsha P. Johnson. 💖🏳️‍⚧️

Born in 1945 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Marsha was a Black transgender activist and a powerful voice in the LGBTQ+ community. She was a prominent figure during the 1969 Stonewall Uprising and dedicated her life to fighting for LGBTQ+ rights, dignity, and equality.

In 1970, Marsha and Sylvia Rivera co-founded STAR, an organization that provided housing and support for LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness. Their work helped bring greater visibility to transgender and gender-nonconforming communities.

We honor Marsha’s courage, compassion, and commitment to community. Her legacy continues to inspire generations. 💕✨
