PFY 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️Uplifting LI's LGBTQ+ Community since 1993!✨

In 1993, Long Island Crisis Center started Pride for Youth at a time when support and outreach to LGBTQ+ youth on Long Island was virtually non-existent. Pride for Youth has grown to encompass multiple services addressing many of the needs of LGBTQ+ youth and their families. Pride for Youth created the Coffeehouse program in 1995 – the first suburban coffeehouse for LGBTQ+ youth in the country. We

began airing public service announcements on MTV in the mid 90’s - one of the first mass media outreach strategies for LGBTQ+ youth nationwide. In 2001, Pride for Youth launched an action research project, which documented that 94% of Long Island students are exposed to homophobia in their schools and one in ten have been victimized because of their perceived sexual orientation. With the new millennium’s startling HIV resurgence among young gay and bisexual men of color, Pride for Youth led the way to building a healthier generation of young people through its culturally-sensitive Young Men’s Program, initiated in 2003

Pride for Youth seeded and stewarded Gay-Straight Alliances in several high-need Nassau County school districts from 2004 through the present. In 2006, working with corporate partners such as CMP Media, Pride for Youth launched an employment mentoring program for LGBTQ youth. In 2009, transgender teens found their own place to share their specific concerns and build pride through Pride for Youth’s Trans Support Group. In 2014, PFY implemented Long Island's first and only CBO based PrEP/PEP program, expanding this program to Queens in 2015.

The Pride flag is more than a symbol.

It is a reminder that LGBTQ+ people belong in every community, every workplace, every school, and every neighborhood.

At a time when many in our community are being pushed to the margins, moments like these matter. Visibility matters. Representation matters. Community matters.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at last night’s Pride Flag Raising at Glen Cove City Hall. As the flag rises, so does our commitment to showing up, speaking out, and creating a Long Island where every LGBTQ+ person can live openly, safely, and proudly.

🏳️‍🌈 12:00 AM. Pride Month begins. 🏳️‍⚧️

Pride was never handed to us.

It was built by LGBTQ+ people who refused to disappear. By activists who marched when it wasn’t safe. By communities who cared for one another when systems failed them. By every person who chose to live authentically in a world that often told them not to.

And while rainbow logos may come and go, the reasons Pride exists remain.

Someone is still fighting for access to gender-affirming healthcare.

Someone is still being rejected by the people who should love them most.

Someone is still afraid to come out.

Someone is still being targeted simply for being who they are.

That’s why Pride is more than a celebration.

It’s visibility.
It’s resistance.
It’s resilience.
It’s community.

This month, we honor those who came before us, stand beside those fighting today, and recommit ourselves to a future where every LGBTQ+ person can live safely, openly, and with dignity.

🏳️‍🌈 What an incredible way to kick off Pride Month on Long Island!

PFY was proud to join the Freeport Pride Summer Kickoff and stand alongside so many organizations, advocates, volunteers, performers, and community members who continue to show up for LGBTQ+ people across Long Island.

We’re especially grateful to Freeport Pride for creating a space that not only celebrates our community but also invests back into it through scholarships, anti-bullying initiatives, su***de prevention efforts, and local community support.

As Pride Month begins, we’re reminded that Pride is more than a celebration - it’s community, resilience, advocacy, and action.

For many LGBTQ+ people, seeing someone who looks like them, loves like them, or shares their experiences can be a powerful reminder that they are not alone. Representation helps create visibility, foster belonging, and inspire hope.

That’s why PFY is proud to collaborate with an event dedicated to amplifying diverse voices and celebrating the stories that connect us. Through film, art, and performance, Love Wins creates space for authentic storytelling that reflects the depth, resilience, and lived experiences of LGBTQ+ communities and beyond.

As an organization committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ+ people, we know that stories matter. They help us understand ourselves, build community, and imagine new possibilities for the future.
